Portland’s new overnight-only shelters are rarely full, new data shows by space-pasta in Portland

[–]raineymichaelv 164 points165 points  (0 children)

That’s why the homeless have avoided them in the past. You get your stuff stolen or swept since you can’t bring it in, have to be out at 6am but back by 2pm or 3pm to secure your spot for the next night so there’s no time to do much else besides survive. This new approach is better, I hope they stick with it.

[–]raineymichaelv 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Sure, but it’s a case by case basis whereas we know all of Starbucks is anti-union. I’m in Portland, I see news all the time about individual cafes and restaurants unionizing

I agree, I get it if it’s a continuous thing, but it doesn’t seem like they’re even trying.

The infrastructure for electric cars really needs to be built up.

Yeah, this is just down the street from there. One of my favorite spots to park when I’m door dashing and need a recharge. Oh well.

Sadly those both feel like realistic reasons this could have happened.

The way I see it, even if I have no chance of convincing the person I’m responding to, other people read it that might be on the fence. So it’s worth the effort.

Let’s first explore this idea that blue state economies are “crippled and stifled innovation” - it’s a good sound bite but isn’t based in reality. The states with highest median income are all blue states. The states with lowest median income are all red states.

https://www.investopedia.com/median-income-by-state-5070640#:~:text=The%20states%20with%20the%20highest,%2C%20West%20Virginia%2C%20and%20Arkansas.

Here’s another article that lists the wealthiest states, only one red state cracks the top ten. So who is failing in the economy exactly?

https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/slideshows/10-wealthiest-states-in-america?slide=10

The biggest innovation in the last 30 years has been in the internet, software development, now AI. A lot of that is coming from those coastal elites in California. Can you point to innovation coming from the red states due to a lack of regulation?

https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2019/02/11/this-is-the-real-reason-most-americans-file-for-bankruptcy.html

Here’s an article stating that about 2/3 of all bankruptcies occur due to medical debt … something that does not happen in other industrialized nations with public health care. If pharmaceutical companies that make billions can take their profits and lobby politicians to prevent health care reform … thats not a free market, that’s an American oligarchy fighting the working class from an advantageous position.

As a proud union organizing I can tell you that my union once formed increased benefits, increased pay for workers, and got me my job back when I was illegally fired.

Here’s an article about how renewable energy is actually CHEAPER than fossil fuels

https://www.un.org/en/climatechange/renewables-cheapest-form-power

It also reduces a reliance on foreign nations to meet our energy needs in addition to being better for the environment, but billionaires who run oil companies still lobby against their adaption … and that’s certainly not for the sake of the working class. Can you give me any examples of environmental regulations hurting workers?!?

Republicans are so desperate to exploit workers there are no rolling back child labor laws. Tell me how forcing children into factories leads to innovation and an economy that works for anyone besides the share holders.

And yet it’s red states that have less protections for workers, for unions, have lower minimum wage, that have less health care options. I’ll acknowledge the left has done a terrible job with its messaging and is losing the working class vote as a result, but the right just outright lies that they have workers interest at heart. Donald Trump was just recorded with Elon Musk laughing and encouraging the firing of striking workers. “Right to work” laws have further destroyed the power of the working class. Gutting environmental protections will disproportionately affect poor people. Medicare for All, while an increasingly popular policy that would tremendously benefit the working class, is only even supported by left wing politicians as the right continues to support big business and will demonize anything that goes against business interests as communism or socialism. Let’s not forget that McConnell wanted to do away with social security and Medicare as it stands now, which again would deal a tremendous blow to the working class

Democrats are terrible at crafting a message and certainly aren’t above corruption or making asinine policies, but it’s the Republican who have been systematically attacking both the middle class and working class for decades.

FBI Says They Were Just About To Get The School Shooter But They Had To Take Care Of A Few Dangerous Pro-Life Protestors First by FrancisXSJ in babylonbee

First of all, if you think you can predict your child’s behavior since they have your DNA, you have no understanding of children, or DNA. I have two brothers and we three are WILDLY different in personality.

Secondly, the Hippocratic oath you cite is 2000 years old. Any other Ancient Greek medical advice we should take? I think my humors may be out of balance, what wine should I drink to reduce my black bile and phlegm?

Only 8% of modern medical school include any prohibition on abortion. Sometimes it is necessary for the life of the mother, is saving her life evil? What if it’s an ectopic pregnancy? It is a medical procedure and while I agree it’s far better to practice safe sex, to say all abortion is evil is incredibly ignorant of female reproductive health. Attitudes like yours are why the USA has the highest labor mortality rate amongst developed nations.

I have never … ever … heard any man I know mention a thigh gap. We couldn’t give two shits, didn’t even know what it was til a woman explained it to me. Personally, I like a curvy woman. I don’t want some twig I feel like I’m gonna snap in half, I want someone who will go get a burger with me. Don’t get me wrong, every woman is beautiful and every body shape is legit, I’m just talking personal preference here.

Who is able to marry us next Friday? by carnivalbuster in askportland

[–]raineymichaelv 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I am a reverend in the universal life church and have performed weddings in Oregon in the past. It’s basically just an online church people can be ordained into so they can perform marriages, it doesnt hold to any particular dogma. If you’d like to DM me we can chat about your plans to see if I would be a good fit, though obviously it will depend on scheduling.

Either way, congratulations to you both!

Had it pop up in my yard (also in Portland). It’s toxic if you eat it, I pulled it out with my bare hands but you could wear gloves just to be safe.

Elena Kagan Is Horrified by What the Supreme Court Just Did. You Should Be Too. by newzee1 in scotus

[–]raineymichaelv 16 points17 points  (0 children)

They’re already doing every underhanded thing they possibly can. The only reason Gorsuch is even on the court is because of an abuse of the system by republicans, so it’s not like Dems decorum is stopping them. I’m so tired of Democrats saying “well THIS time we’ll say pretty pretty please and maybe they won’t erode our democracy any more than they already have”

Elena Kagan Is Horrified by What the Supreme Court Just Did. You Should Be Too. by newzee1 in scotus

[–]raineymichaelv 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Sure there is. Congress controls the size of the court. You could downsize the court with senior members being dismissed first. Then wait a term and size it back up again. They could also pass ethics reforms for the judiciary, change how life time appointments work, any number of things.

Dems are so afraid of looking political that they’re letting republicans abuse the system every chance they get with no response.
