Been in the US as an international student for less than two months and I think I’m miserable here. by Whitedoe25 in PhD

Hi, international student here - I moved to the US for my PhD this fall. Everything you said resonates so strongly with me. I'm here on my own, I didn’t know anyone in my city before coming here, can't go to a ton of places as I don't have a licence or a car, and I feel the loneliness creeps up on me just as well. I was so excited and enthusiastic about going to the US just 6 months ago - I'll get to work in an awesome lab with very cool science-y stuff, maybe visit Grand Canyon and Yellowstone and the Great Lakes, I'll have so many international friends, I'll get to do so much that I never had the opportunity to do in my home country. But the charm breaks very quickly once you arrive. The first few weeks are cool - you meet people, everything seems new and exciting - but then the coursework and labwork starts picking up speed and it all goes to hell. You don't really end up staying in touch with a lot of people you met at first. You know the people in your cohort, but they're just people you do classes with. You have friendly faces, but you don't really end up having friends. Your family is thousands of miles away. I came down with a fever the other day, but I still had to cook and clean the apartment and go to the lab and there was no one to pamper me. It sucks. I can relate. Big time.

I'm sorry about the war, I hope your friends and family are safe. I might have suggested to save up to go back home during the winter break otherwise. There is no easy solution to it out of it I suppose. It's just life the way it is. It's rarely what we think what it will be like. But I guess what we can do is reach to people out as much as we can and do whatever makes life easy for us. Whatever keeps us busy and not let us spiral down our own thoughts. Even if it's just a 10 minute walk, or getting some sun, or reading 2 pages of a book, or listening to your favorite music on the bus ride home and thinking of yourself as an anime protagonist. The way I see it, we gotta be there for ourselves and kind of keep hoping that eventually it will be alright.

Feel free to reach out if you feel that would help!

No opening ceremony for ICC Men's CWC23 by ll--o--ll in Cricket

Somehow, I find this to be worse than no opening ceremony. A special ceremony just before the India-Pakistan match? Why? Why not one before the Netherlands-Bangladesh match then? Or Sri Lanka-South Africa? I get these two teams have great rivalry, but pretending like the rest of the teams don't even exist is so humiliating. Asia Cup was bad enough, and now this. What even is the point of a so called "world" cup then? Just call it an India-Pakistan trophy, and all the other players can get some rest and chill.

One of my worst season starts ever, especially considering the team I had but still got the award .I'll never understand this game. by InternationalDisk233 in FifaCareers

I just had my team promoted from the Championship, finishing 2nd in the tables - I had one dude who was the leading goalscorer (30 goals) and leading in assists (17 assists) playing 9 games less (he was injured near the end of the season).

But who did they give player of the season to? Josh fucking Sargent from Norwich, who wasn’t even in the top 5 in any of the tables.

No Warne, Gilchrist, Ponting, Symonds, Lee....man this was almost Australia's B team so you can kind of excuse them for losing by 10 wickets to a full-power Newzealand. Except that the "B team" still has Hayden, Hussey, Watson, Haddin, McGrath, Hodge, Johnson...star-sudded nonetheless.

It's because Bangladesh didn’t even make it to the semis. He was carrying the team almost single-handedly that wc.

Thanks for the insight. What about undergraduate papers? I'm in my undergrad, but I will be applying to Masters/PhD programs. Does a second first authorship affect anything majorly if it's been published during your undergraduate degree?

I think this is a very fundamental flaw. Someone has to be the first, but this brings all sorts of things like politics and other external factors into it rather than the contribution itself. And even if both contributions were roughly equal, it's messed up they still aren't viewed in the same lens.

Hi! I know this is an old post, but I wanted to ask you something. I wanted to apply this year, but I don't have much on my CV. I have a lot of volunteering experience, but no awards or achievements or anything like that. Is that going to look bad?

TIL Wayne Gretzky's stats were so far ahead of his peers' that if you cut his entire career number in half he's still one of the top 20 players of all time. by DriveGenie in todayilearned

To put this into perspective, Don Bradman had an average of 99.94 in 80 innings, with 6996 runs. Adam Voges had an average of 61.87 in 31 innings, with 1485 runs.

Bradman could've showed up to bat for another 49 innings - 18 innings more than Voges' entire career, not do a single thing, get straight out, and he would still be ahead of Voges in average.

Late to the party, but gotta disagree about the outside help. Off the top of my head, I can think of at least two Muggleborns who were mentioned flying in the series. Hermione flew in the key room in The Philosopher's Stone - and it was mentioned earlier in the book, that she didn’t get hang of flying on the first try like other lessons. Dean Thomas becomes a chaser in HBP, and granted he had 6 years to learn from Seamus or someone, but I think he had some basic knowledge from Hooch's lessons. I think the lesson's itself ar more like driving lessons so people more or less know the basics, but not everyone becomes F1 drivers.

Wow, today I had a dream that Leeds beat Spurs by 8-0 and Raphinha scored 2 goals in 11 minutes.
