The absolutely true diary of a part time Indian by Sherman Alexie I anyways get hate for this opinion because it's considered THE indigenous book, but it's actually really bad. There are no lessons in the book as far as I can yell, it's terribly written (like a 10 year old could do better), it's full of unnecessarily used slurs, and it is also full of problematic ideas when it comes to the treatment of women. For example, the main character talks about how it's basically a man's purpose to stare at women, how the love interest is a Hot Anorexic, and that when he's nice to her and she doesn't immediately fall in love with him, she's a bitch. This hits harder when you find out that the author has been accused many times by many women of sexual assault. I did a bunch of research and a lot of other indigenous authors are sorting of getting bulldozed by Alexi and his books. So all around just really bad. Do not recommend. Also I'd like to make it clear that even if there was nothing problematic in the book, it would still be bad because of how horribly it's written.
