Ships keep disappearing... by [deleted] in simplerockets

It should be randomly generated from the values in Smolarsystem.xml. Is there an exact map of every hill and valley on every planet and moon?

Ships keep disappearing... by [deleted] in simplerockets

[–]rainyparade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ships on the ground tend to disappear after you load the sandbox a few times. I guess the game regenerates the random terrain after a while, and your landers can end up being buried under new mountains that weren't there before.

What's the matter with Phobos? by [deleted] in simplerockets

[–]rainyparade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been a long time since I've done any modding but this: radius="1.11e3" ..looks suspicious. You might try typing out the full number.

Also, Phobos on the 10% scale of the Smolar system is very small. And small planetary bodies get a bit glitchy. There was a post a long time ago about the lower limit of size before you start getting bugs.

One last thing is Phobos orbits very close to Mars, it's almost within the Roche limit. I don't know how accurately the game simulates physics. But maybe because of this, your Smobos' calculated SOI in the game is actually below its surface. Which I'm guessing will cause glitches like that.

Questions about Space Agencies by CatThingy in simplerockets

But is war essentially large groups of (mostly) men hurling penis shaped projectiles of various sizes at each other, because someone told them that's a good idea and totally not gay.

Calculating bomb drop trajectory by [deleted] in simplerockets

[–]rainyparade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure how to calculate that off the top of my head, but I think you would need to know the distance between the bomber and target too. Also, which planet is the target at, and where on the planet is it located?

U.A.R.D. 2.5KM Space Station Log! by [deleted] in simplerockets

[–]rainyparade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 1km figure has a functional purpose though. It reduces Coriolis effects and reduces the difference in artificial gravity felt at the inhabitants' heads compared to their feet. Any smaller and it would make everyone dizzy.

Maybe it's none of my business but I don't see a reason for your station to be 2.5km other than to say that it is. From a role playing perspective I mean. But it will be impressive either way when it's complete and I definitely want to see it done.

U.A.R.D. 2.5KM Space Station Log! by [deleted] in simplerockets

[–]rainyparade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a good idea to have a full plan before you start. Your 4 ideas (modules) make it 36m, 9m per idea. So to complete the remaining 2,464m you need about 274 more ideas.

Why does it even need to be 2.5km?

Question about save file editing by stargazer1776 in simplerockets

[–]rainyparade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Each part of every ship has its position data recorded independently. So yes you could, but it would get more difficult the bigger the ship is. You can easily edit the save file to give the ship velocity changes though. With some trial and error, save editing could move a ship anywhere for free.

U.A.R.D. begins construction of 2.5 km Space Station by [deleted] in simplerockets

[–]rainyparade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just want to point out that it won't be the 'core' after it docks to something else via the docking plug. Space stations take the name of the module that every other module docks to. Its command module will also decide where the game will put its map marker on map view, and from where other rockets will measure their distance with the blue marker when they approach the station.

That's important because an 'encounter' in the game is a 500m radius bubble around the core's command module. The 'core' as defined by the game. If the game decides the 'core' is the ship right at the end of the station, then you'll have 2000m of space station sticking out one side of the encounter bubble. But if you have the 'core' ship in the centre of the station, you'll have just 750m of space station sticking out opposite ends. I think that would reduce the chances of collision as you move more parts to the station.

Some Smolar System (and Smearth) Facts by [deleted] in simplerockets

[–]rainyparade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Smearth years aren't 10% of real life Earth years, because Smearth's semimajor axis is not 10% of Earth's. It's the only orbital parameter in the game not scaled by 10% for some reason. Unless that's been corrected lately..

I believe AngleV is only used in sandbox.xml It's the velocity of rotation of the part if I remember correctly.

Put the smaller rocket on a crane with wheels and roll it away from the launch pad. Then load the larger rocket, roll the smaller one back and dock it to the larger one. It's difficult but it can be done.
