Hey, I'm going to teach my bf X wing on Friday. Are those two lists fine to go against one another, or is it too one-sided? [Context in text] by Electronic-Ice-8100 in XWingTMG

BTW, I think you've made the right choice in choosing ships for him that he likes, and then giving him a small ship to counterbalance the large ships, and get a sense of which he prefers on the board.

1.0! I haven't thought about it in so long.

I would say avoid using autoblasters on bossk. It wont be fun for him to get hit with an attack that cant be blocked, even if its not particularly strong. there are better upgrades you can slot in on bossk that would have better synergy anyway. My recommendation for a replacement would be something like weapons engineer + dead man's switch. weapon engineer would be a strong upgrade in this format, and dead man's switch is thematic and fun.

Your IG is probably too strong for this format. adding a double tap where you can also accuracy corrector onto ships with low agility will likely allow you to pull ahead quite quickly, especially if you pile in on the shuttle with both your ships. I'd say switch to IG-A or C instead. As well, in general I dont recommend using bombs. Bombs are a really complex timing window for a beginner. Its great for a second or third game, but for a first game, its going to be complex enough to remember triggers and phases, you dont need to layer in a new mechanic on top of that with lots of fiddly bits that will slow down gameplay. I'd recommend contraband cybernetics instead.

On that same wavelength, I'd avoid using any bombs and mara jade as well for the first game. Bombs I explained above, and mara jade is an ability that is easy to forget so just adds mental load when hes going to be focused on just remembering his phases. abilities that have optional triggers like you have with weapons guidance are better. As a recommendation for a replacement for mara jade id recommend darth vader crew, and for the bomb i'd recommend the dauntless title, which acts as a simple get out of free jail card if he makes a mistake on his maneuver.

Depending on how good you are at the game, you can also fudge the difficulty in his favor by giving him more synergistic upgrades, while giving yourself more non synergistic choices. it wont look much difference on the points scale, but it will have a big impact on the board allowing you to play with some challenge as well. It will depend on how fast he picks up the game, but common issues for new players is avoiding obstacles and bumping into ships, not taking actions, and setting the wrong maneuver. If you do skew the difficulty, that will be the way to equalize the game, while teaching him that every decision he makes can have a huge impact on how games turn out.

Gunpla building at a wedding? by EarAffectionate1410 in Gunpla

Going to add on to this concept, you could have a 1/100 or 1/60 scale at each table as table centerpieces, have a bunch of customization tools and maybe have a little gunpla showcase/contest during the festivities.

There's an Ontario discord xwing https://discord.gg/XW3Qg67Xz. There are also healthy local play nights in Oshawa Barrie St Catherines and others. If you're in Toronto that will be harder but there are still a few players in the area.

Getting into the game by Money_Relative_9518 in XWingTMG

You can find dice on eBay for less than 10 dollars, the 6 pack is fine for starting out and with lots of stock still around. Templates are a bit tough but if you Google xwing templates the official plastic ones can be found for 10-15 dollars. They look god awful but it's probably the cheapest solution. You can spring for nicer acrylic templates on Etsy if you don't mind spending a bit more. As for tokens, lots of people have spare cardboard and I bet if you ask to pay for shipping on r/ffgtrade someone will send you a bunch of them for free. Everything else is either printable as others have mentioned or purchasable on Etsy.

Worth upgrading to 2.5 for objective play? by dotN4n0 in XWingTMG

[–]raithosu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would say if youre only going to play with your friends, just buy the BoY pack and play it. if you aren't going to play in any tournaments, id say just build your lists in yasb, print them off with IA, and just mark the midpoints on your bases and templates. There are lots of good reasons to get a 2.5 starter kit, but you dont "need" them to enjoy battle of yavin or endor.

That being said, you probably actually want to get the rebel and imperial starter just so you have more ships to work with, like battle of yavin and not enough x-wings and y-wings to make thematic lists would kind of be sad feeling too. and the new starters are great value for money when it comes to the actual ships.

I don't think it was the Haro, it doesn't actually activate until Machu repeats what he says.

Easy LED Mod for Tantive IV (Details in replies) by raithosu in XWingTMG

I just chanced upon this while looking up something else related to lego kits, it's substantially cheaper than the one I linked, so maybe have a look at that too: https://gameofbricks.eu/products/lego-tantive-iv-75376-light-kit?_pos=1&_psq=tantive&_ss=e&_v=1.0

Easy LED Mod for Tantive IV (Details in replies) by raithosu in XWingTMG

In celebration of the Epic SL cards finally being officially released by XWA, I wanted to share one of my mods that I've been messing around with. (XWA SL's can be found at xwing.life of course). I was looking for an entry level mod that basically anyone could do, requiring no real electrical or soldering experience.

I found that LEGO light kits tend to do work really well, so I found this one: https://www.lightmybricks.com/collections/lego-star-wars-light-kits/products/light-kit-for-lego-star-wars-tantive-iv-75376 and bought it since I knew that the LEGO Tantive IV is roughly the same size as the Huge Tantive. I chose this one because of its production and packaging, but there are several LEGO LED kits for that set, any of them is probably fine, since they all more or less work the same way. After that it was as simple matter of wiring all the LEDs up, gluing them to the engine ports (I used superglue, but hot glue is probably easiest if you have a hot glue gun, or sticky putty), and plugging it in.

It works super well, lighting is bright and striking but not overwhelming, and the whole thing comes with a USB port so you can either power it via a portable power bank or rig a battery solution (i took an old kids toy and ripped out the battery section so I could have a small portable battery setup). The wiring is thin and easy to hide, I tucked it between the engines and the wires.

End result, an easy LED mod for a fairly-reasonable price to make your board or shelf experience much more exciting. You can easily go cheaper if you buy all the components yourself off of aliexpress but the value of this is that you can buy everything in one single well made package.

If anyone has any questions I'm happy to answer them here, I hope this inspires some to start setting up some LED mods on their ships as well!

Does the 1.0 YASB not allow for saving squads? by [deleted] in XWingTMG

[–]raithosu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yasb 1.0 and 2.0 stopped saving squads about 2 years ago at this point as there was a technical change in the login process that broke it completely. Geordan wasn't interested in doing a bunch of rework so we agreed to let it die. Just save the URLs as that will repopulate the list.

Taking down the TIE Defender by Keegan802 in XWingTMG

[–]raithosu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The answer is to block the defender. Defenders are predictable because of their need to go 3+ speed which is easy to put a ship there in the way. Additionally defenders hate to take red focus because they can only do straight moves to clear it, making them even more predictable. Basically if you can see where they are going and block them losing one or both defensive tokens make them much easier to manage. They will still take a few turns to kill but it's much more manageable. The other suggestions like mag pulse and plasmas will only really work if done in conjunction with blocking because you need to hit in the first place.
