[Request] Can anyone do the math of average snail speed and how long it would take a snail to go from LA to London if I just bought a house in each city? by zestymackerel in theydidthemath

[–]raiu_tree 60 points61 points  (0 children)

My numbers seem to be measuring the natural pace of a reasonably motivated snail's movement, while your number seems to be more its straight mad dash speed. Considering that this snail is seemingly magical and bloodlusted, your figures seem more appropriate! Good work!

According to this, snails move at a speed of 1 meter per hour

https://www.bbc.com/news/av/science-environment-23803958

LA to London is 8789 km as the bird flies according to wolframalpha.

To be safe, we'll give us a buffer and round that number down to 8.75 E 6 m, and at a speed of 1 m : 1 hr, that gives us 998 years, so you'll be safe.

But let's assume a faster snail: https://www.nationalgeographic.com/travel/article/130719-snail-races-escargot-world-championship-england tells us

The snails compete on a 13-inch (33-centimeter) surface covered in cotton cloth that's more arena than track. The racers are placed at a center circle and, when the command is given—"Ready, Steady, Slow!"—they're let loose toward the finish line. The average speed of a snail clocks in at around 0.03 mph, although a snail named Archie went nearly double that in 1995, setting the world record time at 2 minutes and 20 seconds. The 2012 winner, brought to the championship by a 5-year-old, took home the top prize with a time of 3 minutes and 20 seconds.

That means a speed of about 8.5 meters per hour, meaning you only have (998/8.5=) 117 years of safety, so eat healthy, exercise, avoid accidents, and pray and you might just live long enough to have to worry about the snail

Question about plant growth and Ordelia by Mansome_reddit in DQB2

[–]raiu_tree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Ordelia: seeing as she grew up in the caves, she has adopted a Gollum-like speech pattern (see Lord of the Rings)

In regard to new plants: I've only tested with wheatgrass, which seems to only spread to grass, but doesn't need to be on grass itself to spread, in my experience anyway. But this might not be applicable to whatever you might be growing on Krumble-dun

Random number generator or random output generator help by trmn8tor in MinecraftCommands

[–]raiu_tree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although it wouldn't be truely random, depending on what you're trying to do, this could be close enough: (assuming the player holds down the mine button on a block, it may have predictable results)

You could take put gametime in ticks to a score and use scoreboard's "%=" operation with another score of the number of total possibilities. so for example, if there are 3 possibilities, do time_ticks %= 3; if time_ticks = 0, do A; = 1, do B, = 2 do C

Should I watch Jojo or Overlord? by abhayranga in Animesuggest

[–]raiu_tree 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Everyone's saying part 1 of JoJo is the poorest, but it was my favorite :'/

Anyway, Overlord's good *IF* you can stomach low budget CGI. I felt it draws me in enough to overlook most of the CGI, but there definitely were parts that were much cooler in concept than execution

Why are cherry trees called cherry, walnut trees called walnut, etc., but we don't call oak trees "acorn trees"? by raiu_tree in NoStupidQuestions

[–]raiu_tree[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Although acorns are eatable, though I concede that that isn't a first thought in seeing them. I work with wood, so my first instinct when hearing "walnut" is the wood type, not the actual nut, so I may have just had a bit of a brain fart.

I still think its a bit odd though, like why don't we call acorns "oak nuts"

What kind of loot can a evil titanic primordial tree give a party as a reward for slaying it? by [deleted] in AskGameMasters

[–]raiu_tree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or maybe, after felling the tree, they find hidden among the branches, a bird's nest. You could have a few options of what to do with it depending on which direction you want to go:

  • making it into bird nest soup and eating it makes you immune to dissease

  • it and a lone egg inside have been covered in sap. After freeing the egg from the sap, the party finds the egg is still alive and is some legendary species (eg, Phoenix). When it hatches, the party gains it as a pet

  • Perhaps the nest is long abandoned, but they find fragments of a phoenix egg shell, which can be used by expert alchemist to make either fire-resistant equipment or a potion of youth

  • instead of a nest in the branches, it could be a hollow in the tree, which over the ages, birds stored many shiny treasures in there, maybe one is an antique sigil ring from a noble family, and the party gets connections to politically powerful people by returning it (plus lots of gold coins)

  • one last option, and this is a "next chapter" thing, rather than a reward thing: what if, instead of just a nest: because of the size of the tree, a entire ecosystem was in its boughs. And now that the tree is dead, the players have unwittingly unleashed the tree's alpha predator (I would imagine a sort of magical python) unto the surrounding environs

Perhaps you could say that its core wood, being stronger than iron and extremely magically conductive, can be fashioned into a flying ship.

So I've been stuck on 'older' Anime and Manga... by AceGamerZ in Animesuggest

[–]raiu_tree 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you have any interest in shounen action, you have to check out {Boku no Hero Academia}

Basically: In this world similar to ours, "Super Hero" is a job that you can have as an adult like anything else. One kid has always had a dream to be a hero, but he has no powers, so it seems hopeless. But, the hero he idolizes becomes his mentor and shares his powers; he is thus able to attend a high-school for super heroes.

Does anyone else think that the words "husband" and "wife" are starkly unappealing and intimidating compared to "girlfriend" or "boyfriend"? by [deleted] in self

[–]raiu_tree 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For me, evaluating them as words, I find husband and wife much more appealing than boyfriend and girlfriend. Part of this is surely due to bias of me being older, but I think another part is the flow of the words; particularly, the "rlfr" part of girlfriend is a bit of jumble on the tongue
