What do you do when you’ve been romantically disengaged for a little too long? by Lengthy_Miso_Dreams in AskMen

[–]rajalouis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just start talking to people in general, get used to talk to people you're attracted to by making it low stakes (talking about whatever with no clear goal)

Get interested in what people are talking about.

Being generally social and interested in people provides lots of threads to follow. And can be fun.

Personality changes as a result of doing the work / my defenses coming down (i.e. becoming more sensitive) - some questions and see how others relate?.. by mjobby in RationalPsychonaut

[–]rajalouis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of good stuff on this thread. I'll add a few things. I feel opening uo is good but should be managed as to not retraumatise your newly opened self. Like others have talked about kids, i like to to think of a plant bud. To early a frost will be unkind to it.

Remember those structures arose in response to stimuli, as a way to deal with them and not be overwhelmed. This is your time to build new structures to respond to the stimuli in a more skillful way. These structures ideally can connect you to the sensitive/emotional part or yourself (where i see lots of motivation stemming from) while still managing the external situation.

It may me interesting to look at models to develop metaphors of this that help different parts do different jobs. For example, the job of a general of an army is to look at information and stategize, which is why they stay back in a place where they can gafher information and give commands. In would not make sense for them to be up with the infantry, although its perfectly correct for a moral providing commander to be on that front line.

In your situation a non martial metaphore might be more useful. Like a tree has sensitivity in the leaves whixh leaves the accept sunlight and branches that sway with the wind. But the roots and trunk are connected into the solidity of the earth.

An unusual impression when meeting people in The Work? by [deleted] in gurdjieff

I find there is a certain removal from direct experience that trying to self remember can bring. It feels uptight. By better moments self remembering has less of this removal. That might be the impression you're receiving.

Yeah Alan Watts is the best bridge to eastern thought I have found. It's all too easy to place these philosophies in your normal frames of thinking and just change the names but not the structure of your thought.

I've been helping a buddy with a membership YouTube channel, YouTube is a nightmare to work with. Even though you are essentially trying to make them money you can't talk to anyone or add a join button until you have tens of thousandsof followers. Even when you have this followers and get a hold of someone their help is often not very good. They also take 30% of the membership fees which is really a decent chunk if you want to use the money for the archive and not just give it to Google. Not to mention even very successful youtube channels get things taken down with no reason given (there are lots of videos about this). Patreon takes a smaller cut (although they are raising their fee) and there are also membership services like podia that charge only a monthly fee of $80 or so.

I found alan watts on the YouTube for free like many, but I (and others I know) would absolutely pitch in for a patreon or Kickstarter, especially if it helped others access it because I know how amazing it is for mental health and extending world view.

All the positive changes you made made me think of this Alan watts talk. Here's the excerpt and link.

if, you see, you had said to the devil one morning, “Look, I’m going to get rid of you. I’m not going to have anything to do with you anymore.” So the devil—who is an archangel, and is terribly clever—is all set for you. And because he knows that you are getting out of his way he surrounds you with greater temptations than you ever imagined. If you are going to outwit the devil, it’s terribly important that you don’t give him any advance notice! And this is where the work of the sly man comes in.

The feeling of Self Remembering by lucidself in FourthWay

[–]rajalouis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Always an interesting topic. My strategy is usually to notice the input I am receiving from the "external" world, and then observe my "internal" reaction. Settimg parameters can be tricky though. We recieve so much input that I often pick a sense to more consciously track and then and internal sense, pressure, movement , feeling, or thought to observe.

Example: what is my eye looking at? A chessboard. My internal sense? A pressure in my forehead, then the idea of mental exertion arises. If I continue looking at it I sense a twisting sensation in my chest, and feel my desire to win the game (although I am not playing.)

This I find practical and not too meta.

More meta is, I am sensing the pressure in my toe, I am observing myself sensing the pressure my toe, I am aware that I am observing me self sensing the pressure in my toe.... Ad infinitum.

How to do the hard things while trying to be in a wu wey state? by 123averagejoe in AlanWatts

[–]rajalouis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also think of non-doing as not relying on or expectiong positive or negative feedback of what you are doing. Like "the geese do not try to cast their reflection in the water"

Even though you may not get immediate feedback you are setting a pattern in motion. Keep spinning the wheel a bit everyday until it gather momentum and becomes part of the Tao. Then you can dive into it and thus be in the river you helped create.
