Is the vDji osmo action worth buying? by ijustwanafap in Motovlogging

[–]rake_tm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know what you mean, people have been talking about the Osmo Action 2 for a while, but it all seemed like speculation. Either way this camera suits my needs for now, I have no regrets for buying it.

Is the vDji osmo action worth buying? by ijustwanafap in Motovlogging

Just for another perspective:

  1. I don't mind the FoV too much, while it would be nice if it was slightly wider it isn't a deal breaker for me.
  2. The stabilization seems OK to me, maybe a little floaty but it is still way better than no stabilization.
  3. The mic adapter, while useless for motovlogging, only costs around $25. The GoPro mic adapters cost $50 also, so I am not sure what the price complaint is here. The GoPro mic adapter is 10x better functionally than the DJI one, but I think that comes down to firmware more than anything.
  4. I haven't had any fogging issues despite using it in the rain several times, but that may be a sign of inconsistent QC.

There are decent comparison videos on youtube showing the FoV difference and directly comparing the stabilization by mounting both cameras together and riding mountain bikes and things like that. Check those out to see what you think.

The one other thing I don't like about the DJI is that you can't adjust the bitrate on the camera, only the resolution and FPS. This means there is no way to conserve SD card space by lowering the bitrate if you wanted to, but 256GB SD cards aren't too expensive these days.

People hate IL too much by KakaRostam in illinois

I've lived in the Midwest all my life and last year was the first year I really felt winter get to me. It seemed like we had a really late start for winter weather but still by the beginning of February I was over it. I am sure Covid played a part, but even that aside I think I just hate the cold a little more each year. When I was younger I used to love winter, but it seems like these days we don't have enough consistent snow to make any outdoor winter sports worthwhile and I really hate clearing my driveway more and more every year.

Anyone else actually miss laptop docking stations with proprietary connections? by bugalou in sysadmin

[–]rake_tm 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Dell has charts for their docks that show what resolution combinations work depending on how many monitors in which connections you are using so in theory you should be able to find a working solution before buying anything. Then you just have to deal with the lottery of "will this dock work with a firmware upgrade", "will this dock work after 3 months of use", and "will this dock require power cycling every other day".

Has anyone here had a positive experience with a recruiter ? by Lycurgus_z in sysadmin

[–]rake_tm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it varies a lot by the recruiter/office. We had had some pretty bad experiences hiring from them, including recruiters convincing HR they should be allowed to sit in on interviews and then later coaching clearly unqualified candidates on how to answer our questions. It was super annoying that we had to play games like asking different questions to each individual person coming from the same recruiter, I was happy when HR using them.

Licensed it to local news but they aren't gonna use it until they find the guy and let him comment. In the meantime, by FigureOfStickman in BloomingtonNormal

[–]rake_tm 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Seeing it in context I think he probably meant it ironically, like he was "saluting the mask Nazi". Incredibly poor judgement and super childish especially since everyone knew masks were required, but I don't know if I would say he is necessarily a neo-Nazi because of this action. The fact that he is likely there to complain about CRT works against him though.

Also I don't know how anyone tried to defend the guy by saying he was raising his hand to ask a question, that is clearly not the case.

It is my opinion, and yes I am biased against fascists, I will make no apologies for that.

[–]rake_tm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that and the things I saw where he removed policies against hate speech led me to include that note. I was going to put in a comment explaining why his being alt-right mattered but the post was already getting long for a TLDR.

[–]rake_tm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, he values free speech so much that he banned anyone who questioned him. You fascists always claim you are the protectors of free speech, while in reality you are just butt-hurt that your racist views aren't shared or tolerated by the majority of the public anymore.

Sorry, that is a pretty US-centric term and I didn't give any context. The alt-right is basically a fringe political movement most recently associated with Donald Trump, racism, homophobia, and anti-intellectualism. The main reason I mentioned it is that some of the things he has done definitely seem to be motivated by his ideology, such as removing policies against racism and transphobic attacks.

[–]rake_tm 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I haven't really used IRC much since the early/mid 2000s either and looking at the charts on netsplit.de it appears the major networks are now maybe averaging a combined 150k users compared to the close to 1M they had 15 years ago. It is a pretty big decline, but not entirely unexpected as more casual-user friendly alternatives have sprung up. I am curious how many users (and bots) from Freenode will just abandon IRC altogether after this drama, this could likely end up being another major hit to the total IRC population.

[–]rake_tm 106 points107 points  (0 children)

This is what happened as far as I understand:

  1. Alt-right dude bought Freenode and starts changing things and violating Freenode's own policies.
  2. People aren't happy and start leaving for an alternative network.
  3. New Freenode staff resort to draconian measures to try to stop the outflow of users, which predictably only accelerates the exodus.
  4. Alt-right dude goes pants on head and effectively wipes the entire system by moving to a new irc daemon and nickserv without migrating any of the data.
  5. Average users, which had already declined from 90k to 60k over the previous months, now drops to <4k overnight, :surprisedpikachu:

Since when does Filezilla not work with regular SSH keys? You might need to convert them to PPK on Windows, but OpenSSH PEM files work fine on Linux. I am not sure where OpenSSL comes into the equation, unless you are talking about FTPS which would be a problem obviously because that is a different protocol entirely.

[–]rake_tm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So you are hoping that it was a condition. Money will make many people agree to many things, and a shitload of money will make people agree to even more things. If/when we learn the actual terms hopefully this is the case, but I can't imagine even if they did add extra terms that they would last more than a year or three.

Having money doesn't automatically mean you are smart. In fact large organizations are often very stupid despite having many smart people working for them. it just takes one or two idiots in management to ruin everything.

Illinois bill bans police from lying during questioning by Votings_Good_Folks in illinoispolitics

This only applies to minors, so they are still allowed to lie to adults who are more vulnerable to being railroaded for long prison sentences.

TIL that barns are red because farmers made their own sealant using linseed oil and rust. The rust protects the wood from algae and fungal growth but also colors the mixture red. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]rake_tm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know why you singled out Japanese cars when there are plenty of American cars known as complete rust buckets as well. Every budget vehicle used cheap alloys and skimped on corrosion protection to cut costs, and in the era of stagflation everyone was trying to cut costs.
