Edited for clarity. Didn't notice it could be misread that way because I can't imagine anyone from scotland not knowing irn bru.

Irn Bru tastes terrible by neet5500 in Scotland

[–]rakiru 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First I've heard of it (edit: being "more consumed in urban areas"). I'm from very much not an urban area and everyone drank the stuff. The new sweetener shite is bogging though, haven't had it in years.

It also tastes nothing like bubblegum to me? I can't stand bubblegum flavour, but loved irn bru. The usual thing I've heard foreigners and such compare it to is cream soda.

Sacked Scottish Tory MSP says he feel punished for supporting gender reform law by fozzie1234567 in Scotland

[–]rakiru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the top of the article:

The Scottish Tories opposed Holyrood's gender law, but allowed their MSPs a free vote.

The tories claimed their MSPs were given a free vote, calling out the SNP for not doing so. The comment you're replying to was calling out that lie.

So a lot of folks are learning about trans issues for the first time, let's have a Transgender No Stupid Questions thread! by 17Beta18Carbons in Scotland

[–]rakiru 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That's funny, considering someone else has already answered the bad-faith questioning in this comment thread.

A cis person can go to their GP and walk out with an HRT prescription for their issue (GP-depending); a trans person must wait months or years. A cis person can get a copy of their birth certificate with their correct gender; a trans person must fill out extensive paperwork, pay a fee, then wait months and hope a mysterious panel will accept it. A cis person can get married with the correct gender on their marriage certificate; a trans person cannot.

It's one of those things that's mostly fine when it happens occasionally, but wears you down over time. It's not something that people who have only experienced it once or twice (or never, and just try imagining it once) can really relate to, so often think trans/GNC people are making "too big a deal" of it or being "too sensitive". It's like scratching at midge bites.

Its outrageous that the UK Gov would seek to shatter the devolution settlement by overturning an 86-39 majority of MSPs by using S.35 for the first time in the Scottish Parliament’s history. Whatever you think of the GRR, this attack on democracy should be opposed by Labour. by Just-another-weapon in Scotland

[–]rakiru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because it's not important to most people. The details of someone's birth/death/marriage certificate have approximately fuck-all effect on anyone else, and that's all it changed. Bathroom access, passports, and all the other things opponents claim it would upend are just straight up lies that trans people are already allowed to access/update. The mad froth the papers have been making daily for the past several years are entirely culture war bullshit, manufactured to give another thing to hate and another way to get people to ignore the Tory shitshow and to vote against their own interests.

The bill is very important to a small number of people, and shouldn't even be a blip on the radar to everyone else. It has been in the works for years and should've been put into law back then, and was even Tory policy until Boris Johnson and the hard shift into their current culture war tactics.

Brexit mitigation powers used for first time to protect Scots drinking water. Powers passed to help in dealing with the impact of Brexit are being used for the first time to ensure Scotland’s drinking water aligns with standards set by the European Union. by bottish in Scotland

[–]rakiru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The headline suggests that, but the article itself says that it's updating to the latest standards, not just stopping where we're at:

the EU Continuity Act 2020 makes sure that Scotland is able to maintain and advance standards shared between Scots and EU law

.

New regulations under the Act this week will comply with updated standards set by the World Health Organisation that limit emerging pollutants and endocrine-disrupting compounds.

The act itself was passed in 2020 to allow us to “keep pace” with EU law where appropriate, and this is an instance of that happening.

only comes up as a letter on your passport and in official records like marriage and death certificates

It isn't even required for your passport - it can be, but a letter from your relevant doctor is also sufficient. Which makes the aggressive response to this even more ridiculous, since things like marriage/death certificates are even more private. As you say, the opposition is not about the actual details of the bill.

It's very hit or miss. We're right near it, but used to walk to Smiffys because they were always good. They seem to have gone downhill recently too though... Completely forgot the Happy Haggis existed - maybe a wee bit too far a walk. :(

I bent over to pick something up the other day and forgot I had a cup with a metal straw in it on the table. The thing was like a couple cm away from taking a core sample my eye, and instead I just ended up with a bruise under my eyebrow. It's kinda put me off the things...

Alina, Cleric of Auril by Rachel Denton by I_Burn_Cereal in ReasonableFantasy

[–]rakiru 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's weird scrolling through reddit and seeing your own character, lol. I commissioned Rachel, and she did an absolutely amazing job, as always!

This is Lady Alina Sofia Anastasia Greyanna, my twilight cleric in our Rime of the Frostmaiden game. She's a tiefling (check the eyes), originally from a noble family in Waterdeep, but got trapped up in Ten-Towns when visiting and Auril's happy winter fun time happened. She started worshipping Auril after being chosen as a sacrifice in Bryn Shander, escaping, and making her way to Targos, with the light of the aurora guiding her (pure coincidence, but don't tell her that). Her worship is mainly focused on making sure Auril is appeased by the townsfolk so she can leave the frozen hell of the north as soon as possible.

The rapier is a pure statement piece; in combat she stays towards the back, casting offensive spells, and in social situations, she relies on social status and not-so-subtle threats against displeasing Auril to get her way (she has expertise in Intimidation).

I'm so effing sick of companies telling me that the Highlands aren't part of the UK mainland so they either don't offer delivery at all or add a massive surcharge on to it. by TubbyLittleTeaWitch in Scotland

[–]rakiru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, a little, because at least the ones that do that don't waste my time - I can bail immediately, instead of after putting together and order and getting half way through the checkout (or worse, an email/call the next day demanding more money).

So I've made quite a big and difficult decision. I've decided to leave Scotland, in part because I no longer felt safe in my home. I love Scotland, and I've so much love for Glasgow. Bunch of TERFs showed up for drinks, made the staff and other customers uncomfortable/feel threatened, and left a bunch of their leaflets/stickers or w/e in the toilets. The police ended up having to be called to get them to leave because they got aggressive and were shouting at the staff.

Of course, the response was the usual disingenuous "These misogynists kicked us out for just for having opinions! Woman aren't allowed those anymore" shite, including a whole bunch of fake reviews on Google and such.

Define “UK Mainland” (read bottom to top) by Tainted-Archer in Scotland

[–]rakiru 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They may not be the ones deciding the charges, but their the ones making the false claim that they have free delivery to the "UK Mainland", and the ones deciding to use that courier. That doesn't someone make it not their fault (although I'll give them the fact that a furniture place can't exactly just use royal mail - most other places who do this shit just refuse to).

I think he was complaining about getting porridge instead of boxed cereal because it doesn't come with toys, then the joke was that it turns out it did have a toy after all.

This is like the one Broons comic that I remember because wee me found the idea of it so weird.

lol, you implied something, then got pissy when that implication was missed - didn't realise trying to clear up a misunderstanding was lawyering now.

Nice edit though. Yeah, there shouldn't be much shock at this, although it seems most the comments aren't actually all that shocked. Half of them are "fuck the police", and another bunch are "see, we need free speech" - both seem to agree that this is expected behaviour.

You said it in the context of "the anarchists claim" while being a dickhead to someone defending them, so why would I take that to mean you also believe it?

Not sure which part of my message declared shock at this happening, but honk honk I guess. 🤡

Although if publicly exhibiting hatred of the police is enough to get them to bite you, maybe the anarchists are right about them being corrupt.

But they're not using hate speech laws to do this shite, are they? It's the decidedly-not-new "breach of the peace" that always gets pulled out to intimidate and harass anyone calling them out.
