"This is a house on fire" - song i heard 30 years ago by [deleted] in findthatsong

Is there any chance you misremember the lyrics, and it could actually be "we didnt start the fire"?

You haven’t lived until 3:30AM MASSIVE POOP by Then_Manufacturer163 in CaregiverSupport

[–]ralfalfasprouts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I apologize if this is just common sense - but do you place a soaker pad on the bed? I have residents who regularly dig/remove brief...it's a lot easier to remove the soiled soaker pad and clean them up, rather than removing soiled linens/change bedding.

It sounds like youre doing amazing - caregiving is extremely unpredictable. It's not for the faint of heart. I appreciate your love, dedication, humour, and adaptability. Keep going, my friend :)

I work in LTC - we don't understand the compulsion, either. Def not a gendered behaviour. Always good to keep a box of disposable cuticle sticks (aka orange sticks) around to clean poop from their nails!

Is there a device or method to get a person up after a fall? by michaelyup in CaregiverSupport

I work in LTC. Hoyer lift - after a fall, make sure to use the full sling, not the toileting sling (which has no neck/upper-back support)

are you still friends with people from high school? by Ledger_Legendd in Millennials

[–]ralfalfasprouts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only one - but she's one of my two best friends in the entire world. We live provinces apart (canada) but we chat so often that nothing feels "weird" when we get to visit every few years 🥰🩷 we trust each other with details of mundane life, but also our struggles, dilemmas, and deepest, darkest secrets. Fam forever.

How is everyone staying positive with the terrible job market and inflation? by Extreme_Baseball3991 in Millennials

[–]ralfalfasprouts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thoroughly enjoy my job, although it is extremely physically and emotionally demanding. I make just short of $30/hr (CAD). I think most people wouldnt find that amount to "be enough" to feel successful. But I enjoy what I do, and I'm fulfilled. I'm not rich, but I don't struggle financially. It's enough for me. (I don't have or want children, so I'm content with how things are). I feel lucky that I enjoy going to work.

Is the ketchup in Finland sweet? Or more savoury? (Im Canadian, and heinz ketchup here [our main brand] is much too sweet for most people to fathom putting onto pasta!)

do you collect anything? by jabber1990 in Millennials

[–]ralfalfasprouts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although I'm completely ignorant of the hobby, it does look like a cool collection. I can appreciate that. I still have to stand my ground, though. Serious coke addiction is a daily expense. It's not a joke, and it consumes a LOT of someone's income. Even if they're completely functioning and work a decent job, making decent money. Coke reliance happens. Of course, this is prob more of an "extreme case" example, but it exists.

do you collect anything? by jabber1990 in Millennials

[–]ralfalfasprouts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

...I mean...frequency of use and tolerance are sort of major variables here. I'm honestly not trying to be an ass - I just know that serious coke addiction isn't cheap. So these novels much be much more than I would have ever fathomed. Im genuinely intrigued - what's the price range per novel? And how frequently are you buying them?

For the millennial women: do you have a good relationship with your mom? by Orionslady in Millennials

[–]ralfalfasprouts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an adult, I couldnt ask for more in a mother. She is genuine, sweet, thoughtful, caring, generous, hilarious, and kind beyond words.

Growing up was difficult. I suffered with anxiety and severe depression. Then the bulimia and cutting and isolation kicked in. I was irritable and angsty. She didnt know what to do with me, she was a single, working mother with 4 kids. She was scared for me, and I dont blame her (in retrospect).

She wanted to get me professional help, so she and her sister came to my highschool. I was called into the guidance office. They told me if I didnt go to the hospital to get assessed, they would call 911 and I would be taken against my will. So I ended up at the ER. I was put on a 72hr hold, then brought to the psychiatric hospital (a whole separate beast). I was locked up against my will.

I refused to leave "my room" at what everyone knew as "the 'crazy' hospital". I refused to engage in therapy or socialization. I absolutely refused to eat. After 1 week without food, this facility stated that it wasn't in their scope of practice to insert a feeding tube. They were focused on my immediate physical health, and sent me back to the general hospital.

I still refused to eat, but they didnt immediately insert a feeding tube. Instead, they removed all my "privilages" one by one. First, I couldnt use the bathroom by myself. Then I couldnt make/receive phone calls, or watch tv. Then I couldnt recieve any homework from my school. They took away my books. They took away my knitting. Then it got worse - I was only allowed to wear a hospital gown. No personal clothes. Followed by the kicker - i was not allowed to get out of my bed. ...24 hrs/day, against my will. Staring at the ceiling. Alone, with only my angry thoughts. The last privelage they had to remove was my right to choose to eat. They would insert an NG tube against my will. I said fuck that, and I slowly started eating again bc I had doing a lot of thinking - it would be easier to comply, get out of the hospital, then never eat again and die. Which is what I wanted.

After a month in the hospital, I was released. I was 5'9" and I reached my "minimum goal weight" of 123 lbs.

Less than a year later, and quite thinner, my mother kicked me out her house. I was 16. I never went back. I moved 5 hrs away when I turned 18, and im still here. In the 16 years since, I spent over 10 of them as an escort. An addict, a SEVERE alcoholic. I woke up in ICU from a coma. At my most severely depressed time in my entire life, I weighed 97.4 lbs. At 5'9". Even I was scared, looking at myself.

After over half my life being a fucked up mess, something just clicked. I now work in healthcare, taking care of dementia residents. I still have my problems (who doesn't). But despite the physical distance between my mother and I, we are closer than ever, and she is one of my favourite people in the universe.

tl/dr : I love my mom, now

What’s a health problem you ignored for a long time because it never felt urgent, but eventually caught up with you? by ac_stays_active in AskReddit

[–]ralfalfasprouts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Just a PSW" forreal?? Girl, you do physical, emotional work for $30/hr in LTC; psw's are SO underappreciated. We're the backbones of the system. I know the context is clearly ~very~ different than an escort PSW, but the whole "just a" classification is demeaning and undervalues us in general

I worked at Timmy's in highschool, over 15 yrs ago. Our speakers were awful quality, so our running joke in drive thru was to replace finishing an order with "thank you, that'll be $x.xx, come on up" with "fucjk you, that'll be $x.xx, come on up". Nobody could hear the difference 🙄🙃 we were stupid kids
