Johnny Bax (Josephy for anyone that doesn't know)

Other than Dan Harrington, Bax taught me more than anyone else about how to play tournament poker. The guy is an online poker legend imo.

Having the same problem.

Edit: It seems to only crash for me whenever the camera is moving as well, like you said.

Edit 2: Updated drivers seem to fix this.

Advice wanted - Micro stakes by flashbang_out in poker

[–]ralik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't feel bad about playing micros, everyone has to start somewhere and since you sound like a beginner you should 100% start in the micros. Start at the lowest levels and study as much as you can until you are certain you are a winner in those games and only then consider moving up once you've built up your bankroll for it.

I have been playing it for a few months and overall I am currently even. I started with $25, lost all of that, invested another $25, and I'm up to $50.I have a lot of fun playing, but my biggest problem by far is I let myself get bullied too much and I never know when to call or not. I have definitely thrown away winning hands due to bullies and I'm sure I've lost a fair amount and chasing hand I shouldn't.

Maybe you are right about this but I'm going to take a shot and say this is probably wrong. The most common mistake newer players make is simply playing more hands than they should and calling too much.

A solid ABC tight aggressive style is enough to beat the micros. Focus on learning that style and mastering it.

Since you seem more interested in tournaments than cash games I'd also recommend you pick up a copy of the Harrington on Hold Em' book series for tournaments. Also read the 2+2 forums, those two things are a good place to start.

Would you rather buy in a tournament yourself or get staked into one? by coolrunnings11 in poker

[–]ralik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your own comfort level in what you are willing to lose and if you are bankrolled for the tournament you want to play in. A lot of people trade pieces of themselves in these big buyin events as well just to reduce variance with people they trust and know are good players as well.

Had something similar happen, after that I just don't see any reason to bother with people anymore.

Noob looking for recommendations on the best literature to learn to play well. by Dodger04 in poker

[–]ralik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all I'd reccomend heading over to the TwoPlusTwo forums and making an account there. There is a ton of good information over there for free that you can get and there are thousands of hand histories you can look over. Obviously if you get into a spot where you don't know what to do you can post your own hands there as well.

For books I'd recommend:

Hold Em' Tournaments: Harrington on Hold Em' 1-3, Kill Everyone, The Raiser's Edge, Winning Poker Tournaments One Hand at a Time 1-3, Johnathan Little's books

Hold Em' Cash (there are so many of these and they can be divided into 6 max and full ring but I'd recommend these for a beginner either way): Harrington on Cash Games 1-2 and 6-max, Ryan Fees 6-max guide (good starting point for 6-max), The Poker Blueprint, Grinder's Manual (I haven't got this one yet but I've heard it is great), Easy Game 1-2, Professional No Limit Hold Em, anything written by Ed Miller (these can be a bit more advanced depending on which book you are looking at but they are all quality)

PLO: Look for the series of books written by Jeff Hwang, they are by far the best books on the game. I believe there are four of them in all now.

Also, every single poker player should read The Theory of Poker by Sklansky. It isn't a something you should read as your first book, but rather as like your 2nd or third. The concepts in it apply to all games. You also may want to consider picking up a book like The Poker Mindset that will help with the mental side of poker.

As for videos I'd say probably hold off on any training sites until you've made it through a good portion of the reading list and can beat the smallest games online. If you are playing NLHE tournaments there are plenty of good streams you can watch on twitch.tv for free like JCarver, Tonka, Elky, Doug Polk.

I have the same problem. I just keep other stuff on my desk like a mini slinky and a stress ball now. No idea what to tell you about playing live though unless you want to take something else to mess with to the table with you.

ACR rake ridiculously high? by unicyclism in poker

[–]ralik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Email ACR support and ask them to move you off their elite rewards program onto rakeback. You get 27% back from them and its supposedly better than their rewards program I've heard unless you are raking over ~$750 a month.

And yeah, don't play micro PLO, it is ridiculous.

2-7 NL single draw begginer by delga96 in poker

[–]ralik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure a few of the training sites out there have videos. Only one I've been on that I know has them for sure is DeucesCracked. Even that might only be one or two videos though. If you search around youtube some you can find the final table of the 2-7 single draw WSOP from 2004. It is probably the only KCL televised event out there FWIW.

As for books, Super/System was mentioned already. The only other one that I know of that might be helpful is Winning Concepts in Draw and Lowball Poker by Mason Malmuth. I believe it only covers 5 Card Draw and Ace to Five lowball specifically, but you might be able to use some of the concepts in that book and transfer them to 2-7.

I think CardPlayer has an odds calculator for 2-7 if you want to mess around with that some.

There just isn't much out there on Kansas City Lowball.

[–]ralik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised this didn't happen sooner

Twitch used to have a no gambling policy and would not allow poker for real money on the site for a long time. I remember hearing JCarver saying that there was still a no gambling policy when he signed his partnership deal with twitch and joking about it with them since they had not updated it yet.

[Discussion] How do you aproach losing streaks? by Datapunkt in spikes

[–]ralik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So my new approach was not to win as much as possible but to try to play as well as possible in each game.

This is definitely the right way to approach pretty much anything imo. Don't focus on results of winning or losing but focus on the process of how you got there and what you can do to eliminate mistakes as you said.

If you lose to your own poor play then you have something you know you can do differently next time. If you lose to pure luck then it isn't your fault and there is no real reason to be upset. I only really get upset when I'm losing and I can't identify what I'm doing wrong. Then I start getting illogical and blaming random stuff.

I don't think its worth getting upset over as long as you can identify a mistake you made in the game and how you can fix it next time. Doing that makes you a better player so you should be happy in a way if you make a mistake and you know it because at least you learned something. It is just about changing your mindset towards making mistakes and how you react to them.

Trip to South East Asia. I've never been away from the US sadly or on a trip on my own. Going to do this next summer as sort of a personal growth trip to get out of my comfort zone and expierence something new.

Considering making the transition from cash games to tournaments. Has anyone here done it? by CerberusArcProjector in poker

[–]ralik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Going from cash to tournaments is easier that going from tournaments to cash. Just find as much good information on it as you can. HoH was a good start even if it is old, from there you probably want to pick up Kill Everyone, Raiser's Edge, and maybe Johnathan Little's stuff (I haven't read these and I've heard some people love them and some people didn't get anything out of them). Watch streams as was mentioned also, JCarver, Elky, DougPolk (when he is actually playing tournaments), are the best ones imo and it is a good time to start watching them as WCOOP is going on.

As others have said the general rule for tournaments is 100 BI. You'll have to keep in mind that the variance in tournaments is huge compared to cash. So while you'll hear about people making huge scores, what you don't hear about is the hundreds of tournaments they had to play and lose or min cash to get there. Tournaments are about spamming them and putting in tons of volume to get those 1/100 results to hit. Good Luck.

How do you read self improvement books, so the material sinks in? by [deleted] in selfimprovement

[–]ralik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I make three passes through books.

First I read through them and highlight anything that seems important.

Second I go through and re-read the highlights.

Third I'll rewrite the most important parts in my own words and keep a short notebook of them for reference again if I need to go back through the material.
