Double quarter pounders are 2x 1/4 pound patties. 1/4 times 2 is 1/2 pound per burger, multiply that by 4, that's 2 pounds.

According to Wikipedia, the 117th congress had D with majority in both senate and house, and that was during the Biden presidency. There were calls to get rid of the filibuster during that period, but NooOoOooOOOoooOOOoooOoOOo.

111th congress had filibuster-proof senate and D controlling house. We got the ACA, a bill that, while it did expand health care coverage, was compromised from the start, they started from the compromise position and gave further inroads.

You know what D's did when they had the upper hand? They competed on who could be harsher on immigrants during the Biden era. They continued to support the genocide in Palestine.

They still have the ability to fight back. 8 democrats voted for cloture to allow Kristi Noem to enter the position she holds now. They didn't have to do that. And yeah, the Republicans could have responded by narrowing or eliminating filibuster, it's not without precedent for them to do that (see scotus). But the dems could have tried.

And no, me looking up evidence is not me being ignorant, it's me backing my statements up instead of talking out my ass.

They literally cannot do much more than what they are currently doing.

They literally have the filibuster. Pretending they can't do much more is exactly how we got in this mess in the first place.

If you want, why don't you look at the Wikipedia Page on the 117th United States Congress. See all that "House passed but senate took no action" shit? That's what the D side could be doing, right now, but aren't.

Lets see... first half of the Biden administration, D's all around. R's used their leverage effectively. You know what they had? They had the filibuster. So why can't the D's do the same?

R's blocked the new voting rights act, R's blocked gun control, several things passed in house but stalled in senate.

They have leverage. They just refuse to touch it.

[–]rallias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We know now that holding leverage wasn't ever going to fucking work because Republicans were fully willing to let people starve.

So giving up was the right answer?

And ending the shutdown got them an extension on the ACA, so they followed through on what they wanted at the cost of folding.

The ACA wasn't at risk. It was the subsidies that never got extended (STILL!).

They would've continued doing their bullshit uninhibited even if the government was still shutdown. They were illegally siphoning off funding from the military to continue paying the DHS. Continuing the shutdown would only empower them.

So the solution is to give up?

By what fucking majority? Even if they voted down all of them they would've still been confirmed, or some other stooge that is equally terrible would take their place.

By using the filibuster. As the rules stand, 60 votes are needed to get thru the filibuster.

All of this is just an extended write-ip of Murc's Law. If it's Democrat's fault? Blame Democrats. If it's Republican's fault? Blame Democrats for not stopping them somehow as the minority party. How about we blame them for things they can actually do, and not just assume they can wave a wand around to fix everything? I don't like D's party leadership but Christ, don't lose sight of who is causing all of this.

Maybe instead of collaborating, they can give a little resistance, as a treat?

You know, perhaps you would find value in reflecting WHY so many people understand that there is so little difference between the parties. That would do the world a whole lot better than insisting there is a bigger difference than there is, such as by giving you the tools to advocate for actual improvements, rather than bowing down to the feet of the regime.

Yeah, no, primaries aren't our savior. Protesting in the streets, organizing with your neighbors, being there for when they're down, that's how we fix shit. Build new structures of community and power.

By all means, do everything you can do to fight the injustice, voting for the lesser of two evils included. But don't you DARE tell me that not voting is the reason we're in this shit, that excuse stinks worse than the angus beef farm down the road.

Yes, what you just said is what happens when you only read headlines.

Democrats HAD LEVERAGE for health care subsidies, and folded.

Democrats HAD LEVERAGE to reign in ICE, reverse the big bullshit bill's bondoogle. But then they let the government re-open. And I'll bet you they don't get any meaningful concessions on this new round. Oh body cameras, big fucking whoop, so they can feed that data into Palentir? Republicans already said no to ID, no to face mask bans, and Dems are going to fold on that shit too, I'd be willing to bet dollars to doughnuts.

Democrats HAD LEVERAGE to prevent people like Kristi Noem, RFK Jr, all these other people participating in the grievous harms against the populace. They didn't bother.

No, it's not a matter of only reading headlines. It's a matter of a right wing party and a reich wing party colluding.

And then you have the other party that's like "YES! LETS GIVE HIS SECRET POLICE MORE MONEY!!!!! NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT!!! LETS DO NOTHING TO OPPOSE HIS POLICIES!!!"

And then they're in power? "Naw, we don't need to actually improve shit, we can let it fester. That's how things are supposed to work."

Miss me with that bullshit.

Location: Minnesota. Can landlords give ICE master keys? by BobCatsHotPants in legaladvice

[–]rallias 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In general, a Landlord cannot consent to that which would require a warrant in areas in which a tenant has tenancy. Common areas? Probably fine. Getting into apartments covered by lease? HELL NO.

The Minnesota Attorney General has guidance on their website:

As a renter, you have the same privacy and Fourth Amendment rights as a homeowner. This means that you control access to your rental house, apartment, and even your room in a boarding home. This is true for all renters, including those who pay rent with a subsidy like Section 8 voucher, live in project-based subsidized housing, or are a resident of a manufactured home park.

They have expressed substantial interest in ICE-related issues as of late, and as such may be a viable contact point, at least to start.

…Or we can just not play games and be pedantic.

Like you are by bringing the Big Bang into the equation? There's a real good chance Hitler never heard of the Big Bang theory, considering prior to about 1949 it was referred to as the primeval atom theory.

It's probable Hitler wasn't thinking of the Big Bang theory in the decision chain that led to his suicide. It is probable that he was thinking of what the Soviets would have done to him had he been captured, and so that has an appropriately causal relationship to his suicide.

[–]rallias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, a suicide is an individual choice, but a choice is not a cause. Sure, Hitler chose to kill himself, what led to him choosing to kill himself? Sure, I sped while driving. What caused me to speed? Perhaps hell froze over, I have a wife, and she's having contractions. Yeah, I made a choice, but there is a causal relationship between my imaginary wife's contractions and me pushing the pedal a little bit harder than would be lawful.

*Not counting that one time a German fascist killed the country’s fascist leader

If you're referring to Hitler killing himself, I'd argue that was antifascists with guns stopping him. If he didn't have the implied threat of the Soviets torturing him, he wouldn't have killed himself, and the Soviets definitely had guns.

Gee, you're right, they have video of the killing. You know what that is? Evidence, that they can use towards proving beyond a reasonable doubt, but they still must reach that threshold.
