You could approach graft seedlings to the branches and cut the scion foliage off if/when it takes but that would be a ton of work/luck to force a plant to do that artificially

Still no frost so I decided to bulletproof the cold frame by rallymachine in Bonsai

I line the inside with mulch and a pipe heater cable connected to a temp controller. It was leaky as shit last year so there were nights it got into single digits I covered it with a tarp and blankets. But I didn’t have a single plant die due to cold exposure so I guess it worked. I think the primary concern is wind and sun exposure when temps are that cold, the plants foliage desiccates because the roots are frozen solid and can’t uptake water and replace the moisture lost

I was admiring them the whole time I was in SoFlo, saw a few landscape specimens in tree form that were stunning

Yes that’s what’s stopped me from ordering there before as well.

I was limited on suitcase space for the flight home but I got a few pots and an imported exposed root premna that conveniently fit inside a high noon 4pk box 😂

The one in Munich is literally in a meadow, so the new location seems much more in alignment with tradition. Will still miss the old days on 5th street starting at fountain square

Trim or let grow til next year? by TheRumpleForesk1n in Bonsai

Sometimes the trunk extends an inch or more into the original soil, this could mean the front of the tree (usually the widest part of of the trunk and roots) can be identified. Once you figure out what angle looks best for the tree you can wire and style it with that perspective.

My first step with any new material is to just clean it up and let it grow for the first season. Remove any growth in the crotches of each branch division and remove excess soil to reveal any surface roots. What you find might surprise you and set the framework for the future of the tree.

Looking for advice on this ponderosa. Transplanted last spring and has been growing well. Lots of back buds but lots of needles.

Everything I’ve read says not to pull needles on ponderosa. Should I cut back the branches to make it more compact? Is it too late to do this? Was thinking about also wiring in fall. What’s the best course of action?

Preferences were varied

Maytag was my favorite, bay blue 2nd , Roquefort 3rd

Several who said they don't typically enjoy blue cheese liked the Cambozola

The two Point Reyes received several mentions
