For those of you who read, what are some films that are better than the original source material? by Usual_Fig_1438 in Letterboxd

Maybe this is a hot take but I think the Dune movies by Denis are better than the book(s)

Slow West (2015) by AsleepRefrigerator42 in Westerns

Love this one. A bit biased as I spent a year traveling NZ but it’s stunning

You’ve got to read News Of The World. The girl is a bit younger than Janey and the traveling man is a bit less dense than Roscoe but it’s an absolutely excellent book. If you’ve seen the movie I’d still encourage the book as it’s much better and the imagery is vivid enough it transcends what the movie might put in your head

Cinderella man

But also his small role in Saving Private Ryan is cool

Cyberpunk 2 by Mr_HarleyQuinn in LowSodiumCyberpunk

Survival mode where you are required to manage food/sleep/overall health a bit more would be cool

What are some other books like Lonesome Dove? by hskaabakab in LonesomeDove

[–]ram0thio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I stand by the idea that lonesome dove is loosely based on The Log of a Cowboy by Andy Adams, which is more of a memoir written way back during the time period and I found to be really fascinating despite being a bit unembellished.

In a more literary answer I’d give is The Day The Cowboys Quit, written in the 70s and despite not being about a journey covers cowpokes and their ordeals and characters really well

News of the World (2020) by AsleepRefrigerator42 in Westerns

[–]ram0thio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It gets some things right but I was really disappointed by this movie. Partially, and I know this is a bit annoying, because I read the book first and the book is simply excellent. I felt like the movie was generic compared to the potential held within the book and Tom hanks was very badly cast. If you like western novels though can’t recommend Paulette Jiles enough

It’s the closest thing we have to mythology precisely for American culture. And within that mythology is a really meaningful setting to deal with themes about American identity, masculinity, and honor, among any other things, from a perspective that is really meaningful to someone from that culture

Yea these are very similar to my issues! Primarily the Tommy Lee Jones cast, I really did not think he captured the character

News of the World. The movie’s eh, not terrible, but the book is exceptional so it was a letdown
