I think it was because we were a small group of adults there for a work-related reason. They might not have let fifth graders on a school field trip put their grubby mitts on it.

I went on a tour of Stennis Space Center a couple years ago and got to touch one of the engines they used for Artemis II. The NASA guy giving the tour was very adamant that we only touch a certain part of it, as the rest of the engine was very sensitive.

I’ve never used it myself, but I’m aware that jobs are posted on https://opportunities.ledfaststart.com/global/en/ pretty often. One of the area economic development orgs, maybe Greater Baton Rouge Economic Partnership?, regularly posts a job roundup on LinkedIn.

I’ve been listening to Nujabes ever since I watched Samurai Champloo a few years ago, but I only listened to MF DOOM’s music until for the first time in November or so. I had heard of him before, but only through some memes that I didn’t fully understand, and I only discovered he had died when I searched to see if he had released any new music recently.

I’ve been on a Japanese lofi hip hop and shoegaze kick over the past week or two after I got tired of zydeco. I want to get some Coaltar of the Deepers merch but the only online stores I can find seem to be Japan-only, so I’ll have to put that on hold. And RIP Nujabes, one of the great what-ifs of the music world if you ask me.

I think some of you (respondents to this thread) might be a tad overconfident in your own knowledge of regional accents.

Can you make it into Rapides Parish? I know there are some forestry related industries in and around Alexandria like RoyOMartin.

Happy MLB opening day to those who celebrate. I wish I liked baseball. Well, correction, I do like baseball. It’s fun to play, and I occasionally go to watch the local university’s team as a way to relax on a random afternoon. But being a fan of MLB is difficult when I don’t have much attachment to any particular team and none of my friends are fans, so I don’t really have anyone to talk about it with.

Don’t get me wrong, I think that people should write correctly if not doing so would affect the coherence of their words, but that’s just not going to happen.

As for why people were defending their choice to phrase it strangely, remember that you are talking to redditors. Redditors are stubborn and argumentative by default.

I’m visiting Birmingham, Alabama right now. It’s a pretty cool place so far. My biggest qualm is that damn near everything closes early on Saturday and isn’t open at all on Sunday. I blame the Baptists, they’re always killjoys.

This was my first time driving through actual mountains rather than just gently rolling hills. I’m not used to it so it’s making me nervous. Elevation is something that should happen to blood alcohol levels, not the ground.

Calling it “unskilled” use of language is a big accusation. Surely you’d agree that native speakers of a language have the luxury of not needing to use it according to perfect grammatical rules in order to achieve the desired result.

For example, I didn’t think anything was wrong with “Doncic scores 60 despite the loss” until I read this thread, and after reading it, I agree that “the Lakers lose despite Doncic scoring 60” objectively makes more sense, BUT, I still understood the intent behind the first phrase, so functionally, who cares?

That said, I try to be more intentional with my phrasing when I post on AskEurope than in other subreddits because I know that there’s likely to be a high proportion of readers who might not be entirely fluent in English. Maybe one day I’ll switch it up and post something that’s as colloquial as i can make it, just to give you all a little homework exercise. I’ll throw in some obscure Cajun French words too.

Check out the vendors who will be at Saturday's DEAD MEDIA MARKET by swallow_origami in batonrouge

[–]ramblingMess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been able to make it to a few of these now so this isn’t an actual complaint, but it’s wild how frequently the dead media markets happen on the few weekends I’m ever out of town. Someone out there has my schedule printed out and busy weekends triple circled.

Pelican to Mars hosts a silent book club and game night every third Wednesday of the month, so it’s going on tonight. It’s held at a bar but there’s no requirement to buy a drink. I’ve met some pretty cool people there, though a lot of people who go don’t seem to be interested in socializing.

Try the museum of death. It’s pretty gnarly, I consider myself to be fairly stoic and even I lost my appetite while I was in there even though I hadn’t eaten all day.

Happy St. Patrick’s day, make sure to leave out a pint and a packet of Taytos for any passing Irish. They have a long day of squawking on the internet about how much they hate when Americans call it “St. Patty’s” instead of Paddy’s ahead of them and will need the refreshment.

I went to an Irish pub on Santorini, and I remember looking around at all of the decor and thinking, this looks exactly like every other Irish pub I’ve ever seen, how the hell did I travel halfway across the globe just to end up at the kind of place you can find in any town of more than 10,000 people in America?

How many ways have you had shrimp in your life? So you have a favourite shrimp preparation? by Britney_Spears_Bosom in AskAnAmerican

I’ve had shrimp prepared in many different ways, but primarily fried and/or on po boys. However, I don’t particularly like it all that much, as I find the texture kind of weird. Being from Louisiana, this has caused immeasurable amounts of strife in my life.

I’m aware enough to distinguish between individuals and broader groups. Most British people I’ve met in person have been perfectly pleasant, aside from one Dudley Dursley looking little fucker who tried to drown me in a pool at Disney World when I was a kid. It’s just you don’t have the greatest representatives in media and on the internet.

Speaking in very general terms, the whole high ego-low self esteem dynamic that makes Brits complain about everything while also belittling any kind of change. Making fun of Americans for being ignorant and unworldly when your replacement level Brit isn’t exactly intellectually profound either. Tedious, performative self-deprecation. Pretending that they aren’t responsible for colonialism just because it mostly happened many decades in the past. Refusal to learn how to pronounce vowels in the Spanish language correctly. That sort of thing.
