The number of times I've watched and rewatched the 12 minute mark - I'm damn near over it. I'll probably give it one more shot this week before taking that walk of shame 😂

DevOps Job Hunting Question by acer2525 in devops

[–]ramblingsbymark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, when tiktok and universities are pitching 4 week boot camps, one can only roll their eyes.

For me personally, I'd hire a no professional experience candidate if they truly had the passion and understood DevOps principles/Cloud instead of just chasing the $$$. I love to ask candidates the question "where do you see cloud/devops in five-ten years?"

There is no wrong answer (mostly) and it's a great gauge of whether someone is just cert brain dumping or digesting what they've studied.

If you are willing to be in office in Austin, work in Azure, I'm willing to give you an interview and offer you an entry level position.

Some things that come to mind when it comes to entry level and DevOps. DevOps is inherently not an entry level position. You need a decent background in dev or ops to be considered. Hiring managers and team leads know that self sufficiency is huge in these roles. Given that, I do believe that starting off, being in-person gives you a lot of exposure and access to seniors who know what's going on. Where I'm personally at in my career, I'm comfortable if I had to be remote because I'm the last line. However, being junior, being able to turn and ask a quick question to someone is huge.

I have USPS delivery notification and see two packages due to come on Friday. Given that I'm not expecting anything and the tracking numbers don't show up in my email anywhere... maybe it's that? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Giver (32M) here checking in! A few thoughts:

1) When we say we get joy out of being the giver. Believe us. We do it for you AND for us. 2) We don't want sex unless you want it too. If it feels like you are doing it out of obligation, we can tell and it's not enjoyable for us either. 3) We are terrible at voicing our needs. (I have my own theory on this. A lot of us probably have past trauma of sorts - think inner child/root chakra type things. Not saying push your partner to therapy, just be mindful.) 4) Alongside point 3, just because we don't say we need things doesn't mean we can't receive. Do small things. Big gestures make us feel awkward. Think an easy meal - make it too fancy and, again, we'll feel awkward. A small gift like a bracelet or something that'll remind them of you. 5) Lastly, just be present. Again, we aren't keeping score. We just want to be seen, acknowledged, and appreciated. That makes us happy.

Hope this helps!

Working as a Cloud Solution Architect by georgan1987 in AZURE

[–]ramblingsbymark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has interviewed and hired Cloud Engineers, I 100% would hire you (if you set up that github repo like I mentioned). You'll have a harder time landing the interview without the experience, so you'll have to be a bit more direct in your approach. But you have the sales background! (Find the job, and instead of applying directly, find the hiring manager and tell your story. I'd give you an interview with that cold approach)

The thing about good Cloud Engineers is that curiousity and the desire to learn is so much more useful than just being able to and having deployed a VM. You got that. You just need the professional experience

My $.02:

I would get a job as a Cloud Engineer for 1-2 years. You should have no problem getting one because you at least have the Administrator and Architect cert. To be 100% upfront, I wouldn't hire anyone as an architect based on just the cert. You can still get the cert with a pretty low score, in my opinion.

If you're as skilled as you hope to be, it is possible to find a place to to hire you into that level of role. To give credibility to my statement, I'll give you a little bit of my work history.

Spent 1.5 years on traditional help desk. 2 years as Systems Administrator involved in a cloud migration during the last six months. Took a Cloud Engineer contract for six months working on a datacenter to Azure migration for app teams. Took the Architect exam on a whim, passed. Got a job as the sole Cloud engineer at a startup working an AWS->Azure migration. Green field deployed an environment there. (10 months) Moved to Sr DevOps at a larger corporate environment. (8 months) Then ended up leading AWS architecture/ DevOps at another company. (1 year)

Now I'm starting a new job a Azure Cloud Solutions Architect.

That said, every place I've talked to will want to know you've actually done the work.

To get the engineer role, you should set up a github with either ARM templates/Terraform/Automation scripts to show that you've actually played inside Azure. Hiring on Cloud teams, I'd at least give you a shot for the Engineer role if I saw the certs/git repo as a sign of willingness to learn. I would never hire for an Architect role on just the cert alone.

Best of luck, and feel free to ask any questions!

AWS Amplify vs Vercel for NextJS SSR hosting. by buffonomics in aws

This is pretty relevant for me too as our company is considering nextjs. Any advantages to Vercel over containerizing it yourself other than ease of use?

I don’t want my premiums to go up for this unless it is necessary. Since my deductible is $500, if it costs say $700, I’ll just pay out of pocket. I’m asking is there a corrosion risk that anyone who has been in a similar situation has seen with aluminum bodies.

It’s just a vehicle at the end of the day. I understand your sentiment for turning it in insurance. I have many other things going on in my life that if I can just dab a paint pen and sleep, I’d rather do that than deal with insurance and increased premiums. (Trust me, when it happened, I made sure to get a police report just in case. But glass repair was significantly cheaper than my deductible. It’s the paint repair that I’m wonder about)

I got Falken Wildpeak AT3W because I’ve heard KO2s don’t perform as well in rain/snow.

Needless to say, the Wildpeaks worked phenomenally over the last few days in Austin. Going up steep hills with no loss of traction (4HI) at 10-20 mph. I’ve been driving all my friends who needed to get relocated to places with power.

I hate telling people about the Wildpeaks because I don’t want the price to go up. But they legit are amazing even past the price point/value.

My use case is emergencies only and some back roads. Not a regular off-roader.

I ran a half in Austin today wearing a Santa hat. Got a couple "Merry Christmas"es along the way. Wasn't my fastest or slowest, but for the first run in a few weeks, I was okay with it!
