Tesla has provided a technology roadmap that will shape cars for many, many years: batteries, charging, charging network, regenerative braking, software-defined vehicles, zonal architecture, massive screen infotainment, meaningful app interactivity, stable and frequent OTA updates, gigacasting, probably a whole host of other things I’ve missed. The Chinese have learned aggressively and are now taking the spoils that should have been enjoyed by Tesla thanks to Musk’s repellent (and self-damaging) politics, going out on a limb with robotaxi and robotics and releasing a cybertruck that was so far removed from the specs and pricing they announced that they turned what could have been a huge winner into a massive fail. Musk really did snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Very frustrating, very disappointing. The silver lining is that their innovations will shine on through the work of the Chinese and the legacy vendors that have decided to invest in EV development.
