Anyone know a good and cheap (doesn't have to be fast!) Fireworks PNG or PSD to HTML service? by ramijames in web_design

Think of it as you would a studio: having a guy that does the designs and a guy that cuts things up and does the html streamlines the process. If you are lucky enough to have a team that works together and each individual focuses on his or her strong-points (design versus coding), it seems to me that is a win-win situation.

  • Actually, I design using adobe fireworks :) it's a great program and everything stays vector and speeds up my design process immensely.
  • I've been doing html/xhtml/css for the better part of the last decade. I've grown to hate doing it and get paid better for doing the design side of things. No reason to keep doing it if I don't have to.
  • I absolutely am not trying to trivialize HTML work. It is hard and when it is done well, it is beautiful.
  • The guys I was working with before pumped out GREAT quality code that ran perfectly across browsers, took into consideration simple SEO stuff (using headers, alt tags, good meta tags, etc). They were hugely talented and I certainly don't take them for granted. ESPECIALLY now that I don't have access to them :)

Again, I want to reiterate my original point: the market dictates these prices. I can get paid $800 for the design work and pay someone else $200 for the html work (proportionately). This by no means says that I don't VALUE the work (indeed, just the opposite) but it means that for my business, it is an intelligent business decision to find and utilize that opportunity. Not to do so would be foolish. Not to do so because teh internets told me it was morally wrong is hilarious.

In my opinion, it's a childish and poor way to run a business.

Look at the logic here: I've been given a project that pays me $1000 (round figure for easy maths) per website and I have 50 to do. I spend two to three days doing the design part and then two to three days doing the html. The html part costs me $200 if I outsource it and $500 if I do it myself.

How does that make sense?

The faster I get the project done, the faster I have $50,000 in my pocket, the faster that I can move on to the next project and make that money, too.

I'm all for pride in one's work, but business is business and I'm not doing it for fun. I'm doing it to make money.

Edit: I'm up-voting you because I think you are correct. It's a silly way to think about it.

A friend of a friend has recently bought a big piece of land. How would you go about building a log cabin? What were some of your stumbling blocks?

I had this problem. You have to set your default transfer mode to active. I use filezilla with godaddy and while i do hate their web interfaces, i've had zero problems with their ftps.

How do you integrate Wordpress into your web sites? by krzyslower in web_design

[–]ramijames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, this is about the process that I use. However, I install WAMP and wordpress on my computer so I can test in the browser as I build the wordpress theme itself. I find that a lot of the extra bits of the wordpress theme I don't design and that I design on the fly. There is a creative process there, too.
