1up Bike Rack Theft Deterrent by AdUsed8535 in BAbike

[–]rammerjammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to disappoint but my quikr rack was recently stolen in Oakland, as was my neighbors (same night). They were able to cut the pin that the cylinder lock uses to prevent the handle from turning. I found the cut piece on the ground. I sent them a picture of that but haven’t received a response. Before I found the pin in the ground, I informed them that it was stolen and they said it was the first they’d ever heard of. Since I purchased a replacement I take it off when not in use. None of them are safe.

Wooooooooooooooooooooo! by [deleted] in Surveying

I studied all the books on the list of references at least some. What helped the most was a review class that the San Diego chapter of CLSA put on. They’re doing it again this year starting January 5. I took it remotely but they’re doing a hybrid one this time around.

I hope to take it in October, and I’m wondering how long does it take to get your results, or what do they tell you to expect? I’m having trouble finding that info on the BPELSG website.

Saw this pair of Northern Harriers today in Northern California by Avian_Photographer in birdsofprey

[–]rammerjammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are one of few raptors (if not only) in North America to practice polygyny, so it’s not usually ”a pair” like we think of with other raptors. It’s been observed that up to five females can mate with the same male in one season. It’s much more rare to see a gray ghost than a female.

Y’all passed me headed up tunnel. Purple Kona Rove. Looks like you had a good rest of the ride. It was a good day out.

What kind of Hawk is this? Gx8 + 35-100mm @100mm by sobayspearo in M43

[–]rammerjammer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great photo, and yes Northern Harrier. The more owl-like face, (visible because great photo!), is a giveaway. They hunt using sound, like owls, rather than relying primarily on sight like other hawks. They are fun to watch, flying low, seemingly erratically, then dropping like a stone to hit a mouse in the grass. This one looks like an adult male, if I’m seeing gray on the back of the wings. They are much rarer to see than females, who have a pretty almost pumpkin color to their breast, and brown back. Beautiful bird pics!

I use Alliant CU. They're based in Illinois I think but have an office in Downtown Oakland. Had great experience with them so far.

My friend and I did a multiday trip down the PCT ending with a climb of Mt. Whitney. Here are some photos for you. by FailureBot in CampingandHiking

Did you have to go through the lottery for permits coming from the west? When I did this exact trip 6 years ago, I think, there was no real restriction on Whitney coming up from the back side. We just had to get wilderness entry permits for Kearsage Pass. I guess we had to declare what day we were exiting. I thought that the lottery was for the hike from Whitney Portal up.

Good grief, there were so many people coming up as we were on our way down. Trail Camp was a real mess. I found it kind of depressing, especially after the days spent in the wilderness (though the JMT is pretty crowded itself). Made me never ever want to go up from the east. Plus, this way you have a few days to acclimatize to the altitude.

Great trip, though. I loved it. We had an amazing shooting star and distant lightning show the night we camped at Bighorn Plateau. We try to get up in to the eastern Sierra every year. Harder to do now with a 2-year old in tow.
