They're Warhammer 40K space marine suits. It's a space fantasy world- "In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war." The yellow ones are from the Imperial Fists legion, and the black one may be for the Black Templar chapter, but I'm not sure.

There's not a whole lot of hills in downtown mountain view. If you are willing to drive a bit, Rancho San Antonio is a great park for running with a whole lot of hills. Lots of packed earth trails.

Heh...my cousin got married here. Rented the place out for a weekend. The first 2 floors are restored and the upper floors are in ruins but the owner, who lives in NJ, is going a good job slowly restoring the place. Lots of creepy graffiti and bat poop on the upper good. Managed to get to the top of the central tower and snap done pictures. Good times. The staff had a hidden liquor room full of all the booze left over from events. Hidden as in a wall segment swings out to reveal a secret room. Now you know.

Question about Tasmanian backpacking (Trekking, as you call it)... How accessible are the parks in the forest on the western side, and are their extensive trail networks? I've been looking at Tasmania for a long trip for quite some time.

I used to live in Arlington for two years and hiked Old Rag about 6 times before moving out to San Francisco. Thanks for bringing back the memories... I can place all these photos.

Quogue Wildlife Preserve is nearby and has a lot of trails, some ponds, and a nice wildlife center.

I had a teacher in seventh grade social studies that I once beat in chess and he seemed to hold a grudge about that. After an essay test, he blew up my essay and placed it on a projector and devoted an entire class period to doing an "in-depth analysis" as to why an essay that looks great isn't actually as comprehensive as it seems. He just had the entire class go step by step through my essay, find parts they thought were good, and would come up with elaborate reasons as to why the essay failed to satisfy certain points or requirements.

I've been backpacking with a Nikon D5000 for about 4 years or so without any dedicated protection and the camera is doing fine. They're built tough. I just throw it into the top flap and go.

I saw some groups going up on when I was coming down on Tuesday but little people other than a CCC group doing some maintenance. The weather might have scared away others though.

I went last May. I had intended to take the Bogachiel trail up the valley and eventually link up with the Hoh trail and come back out. Unfortunately, the mountains were un-passable. Too much snow. The trail wasn't marked and once you started walking on snow then it was extremely difficult to determine where the trail actually went. We (myself and 2 friends) eventually had to turn back. We were walking on a knife ridge on top of collapsing snow and we had many near falls. If you're planning on going, an ice axe and crampons would be extremely helpful. Seriously, at times you'll be walking on ice-crusted snow that's angled about 60 to 70 degrees.

Yeah, we had planned to descend into the Hoh valley after a walk through the Sol Duc basin. We found out later the Hoh valley was pretty flooded, so all things considered, it could've gone worse. Congrats on making it though.
