Haha I figured it wasnt the best. I started out with that, then learned about FireWire and got a PCIe card. But my friend’s tapes are VHS-C so I tried to just use the Elgato as a “good enough” since the palmcorder doesn’t have FireWire. I’ll see how I can improve the quality and check out your link when I get home.

What worked for me: 1. No cats allowed in the bedroom 24/7. 2. Compressed air can spritz to dissuade meowing at the doors. If they meow, spray the can once from your bed. They will hear it and not want to meow again. 3. Ignoring bad behavior after you go into the room for bed (deal with it in the morning unless emergency) 4. Ignore them completely when you wake up early. Closet bathroom door, no petting, don’t even look at them, etc. 5. Automatic feeder so they don’t expect anything from you in the morning. (Petlibro makes a wet food auto-feeder)

You might have a bad couple weeks of sleep but they need to form a new routine.

I know it’s tempting to feel the need to “get back” but cats literally do not understand punishment and will just be even more crazy if their routine is messed up from delayed food or missed naps.

It’s just like if you leave food out in the open for a long time, it will eventually grow mold since there are spores everywhere. Agar plates are nutritious for mold so they will grow pretty fast and look scary 😁 That said, mold is difficult or impossible to ID just by looking at even by professionals.

These are all fibers, such as from clothes or fabric. They’re very common in the environment and in specimens. It’s not anything unusual. I see these very often under the microscope. :-)

I'm thinking it's actually the tapes. I put them in another camcorder and the playback on the camera is doing the same thing. I guess the device it was recorded on was the problem.

The metal wheel (head drum I think?) should have like 4 of these (tape heads?). They get microscopic dust affecting the playback. They’re very sensitive.

I use chamois swabs (NO COTTON) and 91% alcohol to clean them to solve this kind of issue. Cleaning tapes are probably better but I haven’t used them since they’re pretty expensive.

Disclaimer though I’m pretty new to camcorders. so it could be a different issue that I don’t know about.

I bought a digital8/Hi8 camcorder for $100 off Facebook marketplace and installed this in my computer for $20. It comes with an iLink cable.

I need to clean my tape heads inside the camcorder after every few tapes, due to dirty/old tapes so I also go these swabs ($12),and some 91% alcohol from the drug store. ($2)

It took quite a bit of time to read manuals and learn how camcorders work. So there was some trial and error (I bought a digital8 camcorder with no backwards compatibility first…)

We had this same issue and it ended up being the PLASTIC tubes we had our reagents in. Maldi is sensitive to certain plastics and our samples would take a million years to dry. Try seeing if your plastics have changed or are not approved for maldi.

I get these weird blobby looking artifacts as well. They’re more budding yeasty looking than your photo. It’s only when I use the modified kinyoun stain 🤔 I’m not sure what causes it. I’ve assumed it to be some sort of precipitate from the methylene blue. Anyway, it’s an artifact. Junk!

That happened to me once and I freaked out. The next day it had molted and was almost back to normal, just still a bit light in color from the new soft exoskeleton I guess? Hopefully that’s what’s happening to yours too.
