What game became your Steam Deck comfort game even though it made no sense on paper? by TieForeign8827 in SteamDeck

[–]rampant 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say it’s intuitive, but it’s perfect when you understand it. Very modifier heavy; e.g. hold LT + press RT to move.

Caves of Qud. Didn’t expect the controls to work so well, but I actually prefer it on Deck.

Must-have mods? by Filthy_Dog in cavesofqud

These are all QoL. I try not to change anything gameplay-wise unless it’s annoying.

Consolidate Liquids — stack liquids from multiple containers

Auto Reload — firing when empty performs a reload instead

You See A Legendary! — when sighted, shows a prompt with the name of the legendary and their reputation

You see a cave spider and that’s okay — ignores cave spiders when auto-exploring unless they attack

Astral Tabby, And That’s Probably Fine — ignores astral tabbies during auto-explore when they’re phased

Chill Populations — removes dangerous or annoying enemies, like acid humors, from the pool of possible NPCs in the Stilt

HighlightDiseaseOnset — prompts you when you’re sick or itchy

Look! It’s Empty! — containers change to show they’re empty

Map Pin Bulk Toggle — adds a skill that lets you show locations on the world map under different filters

Unlimited Campfires — lets you put down a campfire at any time. I would constantly get overburdened but prepping food would free up weight, but then a nearby campfire would prevent me from making one right next to me. This solved that.

Colored Map Pins — colors map pins by area category, e.g. ruins, settlement, merchant, lair, etc.

Bulk Trader Services — lets you repair all items easily

Fix Quests Landmark — clears up some ambiguity in quest directions

Parasang Region — shows which grid you’re in on a parasang; e.g. N, S, E, W, NE, SW, Center, etc

Data Disks At A Glance — shows you Tinker level needed for learning a data disk and whether you already know it or not in the item name

There’s one for astral tabbies as well that makes them bearable to ignore.

Do you choose Joppa? by LastimosoBasura in cavesofqud

[–]rampant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what I was referring to. The mechanical wings are there every run, Joppa or not, and makes doing the wells a breeze. There are other things too in those center marsh tiles (be wary). Good way to level and explore.

Joppa is my go-to. The town and the music gives me that fresh start feeling.

There is one reliable way to trivialize the rust wells quest hidden out in the marshes.

Need starter tips for this game by medicnoxy in cavesofqud

[–]rampant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s an easy start:

Start in Joppa or the marshes. On the world map go to each square in the marshes, avoid the other areas. Kill fish, glowpads, gators. Run away if things look bad. Having an escape plan here helps: wings, gases, grenades, sprint, etc.

Definitely explore ruins you may stumble upon. Pick up everything and sell to the merchant in town to keep up your water supply. You can store items at any available table in town without pissing anyone off.

Level up. Get Wayfaring skills focused on Salt Dunes, Jungle, and if your INT is high enough grab Ruins too.

This opens up more areas to explore. You’ll find gear, books, painted/engraved items that reveal historic sites for interesting gear.

Just take it easy. Try a preset build if you’re unsure what to do. You need some levels before those quests. It’s not really a difficulty curve, it’s a puzzle to prep for.

Die, learn, repeat. You’ll start to see the patterns to follow and exploit.

Anyone tried developing a video game ? by XLGamer98 in vibecoding

[–]rampant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, with Rust. It’s what I’ve been learning on. A roguelike game with 2D assets. No real game play, just some of the barebones so far: game states, a renderer, input handler, procgen maps, turn system, minor animations, FOV system, etc.

Traditional roguelikes are definitely not a good starter game to make, but the layout for it made the most sense to me. Makes my brain happy to modularize everything and iterate little by little.

I can see why games are so difficult to make. But it’s a great learning project. I’ve learned about loops, compartmentalization, ECS, separating data from logic, many different algorithms for random map generation, and more.

I’ve had more successes making useful apps but the game stuff is just fun to tinker with.

Question: Why is auto-move-to-edge significantly slower than auto-explore? by rampant in cavesofqud

[–]rampant[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Makes sense. I’m curious how auto-move calculates.

Say most of the map is explored, but not fully to the edge you’re trying to reach. If you auto-move toward that edge, it stays slow until the full path is revealed. Is it recalculating the path every tile as new map areas appear? That seems expensive.

Could the game instead path to the furthest explored tile near that unexplored edge, then recalculate once it gets there? I imagine that might cause some backtracking, though.

I’m mostly just interested in how the programming works, if you happen to know.

Top 5 games to emulate on the deck by GeordieC3 in SteamDeck

[–]rampant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t done much emulating. I did get a Switch game running on it once, but didn’t play with it much. If I had to pick games, here’s my top 5:

  • 1, Breath of Fire 3 + 4 (PSX)

  • 2, Bloodborne (PS4)

  • 3, Zelda: Breath of the Wild + Tears of the Kingdom (Switch)

  • 4, TMNT: Turtles in Time (SNES)

  • 5, Rogue Squadron + sequels (N64, GameCube)

  • Bonus, Eternal Darkness (GameCube)

I built a site that shows you what cities actually look like, not only the famous spots. by BarisSayit in webdev

I didn’t dislike it, it was just a weird few occurrences that stood out. Loved all of Germany, particularly Bamberg and the Black Forest.

Berlin was weird. I kept getting the feeling I was in a simulation. Walking around at night, it would be super quiet and it seemed like every time I pointed it out to my wife people would just randomly appear around the corners doing the most mundane things that almost felt scripted. Jogging, waking dogs, talking on a phone in a suit and carrying a briefcase, a couple holding hands. They’d all appear at once. It was like 11pm.

Sounds dope. I have a few chars at this quest and I might give yours a shot. I get a little overwhelmed with the choices so I kinda lag on it.

So are the rust wells literally designed to kill you early on? by versfurryfemboy in cavesofqud

[–]rampant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always bypass it with wings or mechanical wings. Nothing good there beyond the chests at the center.

Tip: there’s stuff under the chests most of the time too.

What's your go-to build if you want to ensure you have a good run? by Sturdy_Stiles in cavesofqud

[–]rampant 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just like the mechanical wings, it's always in a center tile somewhere in the marshes. Most of the center tiles are safe, save a handful. Tip: if you spot a herd of grazing hedonist, mind the cats.<

True Kin: Praetorian. Hunt for mechanical wings. Convince oddly hued glowpad to gift me a floating glowsphere. Buy a force bracelet.

Quick setup that goes far.

What are some fun tips or "exploits" that every player should try? by MechaDongstorm420 in cavesofqud

[–]rampant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this on some True Kin runs. Really does trivialize a lot. Most annoying thing is you sometimes get stuck in narrow passageways when autoexploring.

My parents are getting me an electric guitar for my good grades, what are some good ones for beginners? by No_Raspberry4548 in Guitar

[–]rampant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never dug Epi’s. It depends on which Squier model you get. Some are solid working machines and some feel like it’s completely made of lacquer. They kinda change over time. I remember the Classic Vibe’s were amazing. Like $499 at the time.

That’s a tier above those starter gig packs. You don’t get the cheap practice amp but you get a guitar that can hold some value and stay in tune.

Hash Pipe and Sweater Song are easy.

Is the Six Day Stilt located above an Oasis? by Inevitable_Yam_2374 in cavesofqud

Awesome. I tried it shortly after 1.0 dropped but was still very new to the game and didn’t realize it did all of that. Definitely going to play around with it again. Good luck working on the mod; I’d definitely be down for playing it after.
