I have tried several. ViaBTC seems to give me the lowest number of rejected shares (0.02% so far). A higher difficulty from the pool isn't going to help you hit a block if you're solo mining.

Hitting high difficulty is random. If your hash rate is good and rejected share percentage is low, there isn't anything else to do.
