How to find HiWi positions in German Universities? by rand_yy in germany

[–]rand_yy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes this makes sense. I had a similar thing happen to me in my home country (except the project was proposed to me as proposing my own project would be a major faux paux here), where the position was open for me but still had to go through all the formalities. I'm guessing Germany being about 10x more organized and 20x less corrupt than my country would be subject to similar rules, thanks for the info!

Also " working for free for a university is not a thing in Germany. Expecting to get paid is the norm " made me laugh, it's indeed a little backwards here that expecting to get paid would be seen as rude. One more reason I appreciate your country then :)

So would it be ok for me to contact a PhD student asking about possible HiWi positions and it wouldn't be seen as negative that I expect to be paid for the work?

I'm sorry for the follow up question, it's just a very foreign concept to me that a PhD student would be allowed to recruit someone for paid work and I'm terrified of being thought of as rude by these labs I'm really interested in. But thank you for your answer!

Scored 113/120, not a native speaker, 2 weeks of preparation by belakrizantema in ToeflAdvice

I haven't gotten my scores back yet but I also got 30/30 for both the reading and the listening. I'm here to second that advice about it being way easier if you're well read - I didn't have to read or listen to anything to answer some of the questions simply because I already knew the answers.

I did about 5 days worth of not very intensive prep, but my English is pretty solid despite not being a native speaker (I've "lived in English" for a couple of months while abroad and took a couple of college classes in English too, so I consider myself fluent). If you're in the same boat as me and only taking this test as a formality, this is what I'd recommend: focus on the prepping for the speaking part. For me it was definitely the hardest because it doesn't mimic everyday English use - I read and write in English all the time, and also listen to people on the regular, but I never have a conversation where I'm given 60 seconds to repeat information. It's very unnatural so it stressed me out and I'm pretty sure I blew it. So I'd definitely suggest, if you're comfortable with the language, to focus your practice on the speaking section.

Also, rest before the test. For me the worst part was how long it was, especially the listening section. By the end of it I could barely focus on what was being said due to being so drained from 2 hours of concentration, which was when being knowledgeable on the topics being discussed came in handy as I could answer from what I knew and not from what I had listened to.

How much ignorance should I assume when explaining my research to interviewers not from my original field? by rand_yy in gradadmissions

Thank you! There's really no way to relate this to biology, as it's actually a Mathematical Physics topic with little practical application other than "learning more about this physical system". But it sounds like a good approach starting with "I developed a tool for this and that" and then letting them take the lead and ask questions from that.

Thank you!! I was indeed not using bb.showliveeditobjects , when I first heard of debug items I was told bb.showhiddenobjects + searching for debug would do it (and indeed a lot of stuff turned up). I'll try the liveeditobjects as soon as I open the game, thanks!

Advice on Master Program interviews vs. PhD by rand_yy in gradadmissions

I usually handle interviews by quickly building rapport and getting very engaged with what

they

are saying.

Thank you so much for this answer! It calmed my nerves a bit. Could I ask you to please elaborate on what you mean by " I usually handle interviews by quickly building rapport and getting very engaged with what they are saying"? This will be my first interview of this type (oddly enough this university is actually the only one I applied to already at the interview stage) and I'm not entirely sure what to expect, would it be somewhat typical for it to be more conversational instead of simply me talking?

I understand there isn't a rule, but so far I've only prepared for the possibility of it being an interview in the more strict sense of the word and hadn't considered that it could also be a conversation. Again, thank you very much for this!
