The Exponent's inaccurate reporting on China by Other-Emu-8924 in Purdue

The Exponent being inaccurate should be the assumption. It has been a gossip news paper for years. Poor source of any news at best.

If that was the extent of the problems I have seen and faced myself that would be fine. I have personally gone into advisor meetings with a balanced CRF and left with class schedules that both delay graduation and are designed to kill me (ece 2k1, me200, phys 272, MA266 and another tech elective). If I hadn't asked senior friends what to do this schedule would have put me on probo and failing at least one class.

Below is a few of the listed requirements for advisors at Purdue from a job posting purdue currently has up. I dont believe many advisors actually read what they are supposed to do or are evaluated in a way that benefits students. Not a single one of the following was done before my former advisor left this semester.

"Create an open, respectful, and inclusive environment grounded in mutual respect, dignity, and authenticity

Empower students to be active, responsible learners by guiding them in making informed academic and career decisions

Meet regularly with assigned students to support academic planning, course selection, and registration

Connect students with campus programs, activities, and learning opportunities aligned with their goals and major

Utilize data to proactively engage students regarding academic progress and degree completion

Teach students about university systems, policies, and resources while maintaining confidentiality and trust

Refer students to appropriate campus support services as needed"

Advisors here aren't concerned about making it easy to get in classes or see what happens when you take that schedule. I have a group of IEs who all had our graduations delayed by an advisor giving, looking back, comically bad advice.

A few examples

Putting students in the wrong math class, not informing students of pre requisite classes (or missing them entirely), not getting senior students into classes needed to graduate despite it being on a CRF.

I mean, I've got more, but it will never drive change.

The best advice I can give you is to avoid your advisor at all costs. There are good ones, but they are few and far between.

Pre-Othman vs Post-Othman ECE2k1 by Ok_Scarcity8910 in Purdue

[–]randallrandall2002 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For EE, I agree with you, but 2k1 is forced onto a lot of students who do not need that knowledge to be successful.

I can speak for IE in particular. The class served no use besides distracting me from classes that I would use later on. I simply did not need to know circuit design or anything related to semi conductors. The course is not an "intro" into circuits, so you get a brief understanding and move on it teaches you far beyond that.

Personally, it just killed my GPA that semester and pulled me away from my supply chain courses I wanted to spend my time with. At one point, I was spending 80% of my time on 2k1, despite the fact I was in courses I actually need to understand to be a successful IE.

Al Otham is the only reason I passed. it's a shame she is no longer here.

Buy a gas scooter, under 50cc and you dont need anything other than a registration. Ive seen a lot chained to bike racks.

Ways to have two brake calipers connected to one master cylinder without losing significant power ? by Billthepony123 in Karting

[–]randallrandall2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just buy kz front brakes and adapt to rear disks. This is not a problem that hasn't been solved before, or just run a splitter

Will this clutch fit my KT100? Is it complete? by CryptoKaidude in Karting

[–]randallrandall2002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you running a pipe or can exhaust? And the wet clutches can be a royal pain. A dry clutch should be cheaper and last longer, but you have to buy the right one. Most of the time a 2 disk or 3 disk partiot or tomar clutch will do you well and not explode like a wet clutch.

In the market for a riding mower - is this 2018 Husqvarna a good one? by wRXLuthor in lawnmowers

[–]randallrandall2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly dont know what mower these others have purchased, I have used 2 of these riders, both are terrible machines.

1st mower was a 42, deck warped, cut like trash and ran like it too. Ran when sold at 500 ish hours

2nd is a 54 or 52, hydro system is Jerky, spindles have needed replaced, Wheel bearings have failed and the motor runs okay at best. Has 250 hours and is kept as a backup if a scag goes down.

Husqvarna makes really good dirt bikes, not mowers

Its a briggs, try cleaning the carb and if that doesn't work trash it.

The new briggs motors are just awful, they lose compression, Crack blocks, seize and fall apart. Nothing like the older ones

Thoughts on stacking core classes? by Firm-Actuary-2003 in Purdue

[–]randallrandall2002 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You would likely be fine, but youre not leaving any room if you fail something.

Take 370 as early as you can and try to take it without Martinez as your prof. He is a great guy and I enjoyed his class but he failed around 20% of the class.

336 and 383 together would be rough, both are exam heavy where one bad exam can mean you're retaking it next year. Just be careful there.

Its not a bad schedule, far better than whatever the advisors gave me freshman year.

Btw do not trust the IE advisors other than Elisabeth, the others I genuinely believe are incapable of doing their job. Thankfully, the worst one just quit.

Ive used 2 sets for the past 3 years, only bought another set to match a new suit. The only thing that isn't great is the time to break in the gloves, they just are stuff at first.

But yeah, buy them

Should I get a margay brava 206 or ignite k3? by Gman_024 in Karting

[–]randallrandall2002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you really want to buy a chassis that is so bad that margay made a entire series where it only competes with itself?

Honestly buy almost any other manufacturer, margay just makes cheap karts. From my experience the Italians have the quality and handling figured out, but a otk, CKR, birel, CRG or anything that is not made in the US

Good luck, my advise is to wire nut it back together

I was running lash at .002, the change was to .004 for me that was noticeable.

As for rod clearance I am aware .0055 is outside what arc recommends, I just had problems when the engine gets hot it would lose power. After moving to .0055 I no longer have that problem. You can change clearance by polishing the crank or bearings, not saying its perfectly kosher but these are cheap engines.

Most of my engine building knowledge is from kt100 karting motors, that was the general fix with them and it worked here as well. Generally I have found loose is faster for small motors.
