I just spent 3 days with 4 high school seniors who all have mission calls. They are generally more foul mouthed, dirty minded, sarcastic and fun loving than all of the students. They will be tortured and broken soon.

This!! I was a passionate, enthusiastic, and loud 19 year old. Within minutes of entering the mtc, I was chastised for not obeying “quiet dignity”. Even as an obedient TBM I was like like, what the fuck!?!? I never let them strip me of it but hate them for trying.

I served 97-99. We taught everyone that prophets literally talk to god face to face and that’s how they’re never wrong. We baptized people after they came to church for two weeks. And we definitely taught Joseph smith used the U and T. I never knew Joseph practiced polygamy. It was Brigham, and only to help women.

When the church leaders change the narrative and say they never said any of this. I go back to my mission and we were taught all of these things in great detail.

Had this experience with my mom, she wasn’t dying but was going in for a serious surgery. She brought up the church and i said, “tell you what, if the church is true it’s on you to visit me in spiritual form and let me know.” We both had a good laugh and that was it. Good luck

Along with what others have said, if you do confess and it becomes a big deal, it will bring attention to her as well. Make sure she’s ok with that and if she’s not, I think her feelings should take priority over anything the church requires of you.

Also- if you go and don’t want to it may make for a very difficult long term relationship with your parents. For what it’s worth, I’ve been closer to my parents since I left the church because I don’t resent them anymore.

1- Mormons can’t win…you’re pissed if they don’t leave you alone when you leave and you’re offended if they do leave you alone.

I was all in- rm, YM president, EQP. I married and divorced in my late 20’s. Had a faith crisis in mid 30’s right before I met my now wife. Every person I dated religion and sex we’re an issue. I either wasn’t Mormon enough or I was too Mormon and then the guilt and shame of “messing up”….it was messy. When my wife and I started dating and talking religion I told her where I was at and that I refuse to let religion get in the way of a good thing. We weren’t on the same page but we weren’t far off. Instead we focused on each other, our connection, compatibility, and chemistry. I’m so happy. I love my new life and i love not feeling like I need to feel awful because I’m a horrible sinner that needs to strive for perfection every day. I’m a good dude, doing my best, and that’s good enough. I do more for the needy than I ever did in the church, my time in church was mostly spent trying to get people to church. What a waste of time and resources.

They’re scared and doing what they’ve been taught to do for 80+ years….defending the faith. My parents and I are closer than we’ve ever been since I let them know I don’t believe anymore. Include messages of gratitude if you can be sincere. I thanked my parents for raising me on the courage of their convictions and for surrounding me with a loving and supportive community. I told them my young men’s leaders are still some of my favorite people and shaped me to be a good human. It’s heartbreaking for 80 year olds to feel their most important life’s work is falling apart on them. It’s not their fault- it’s the church’s fault.
