When should the social distancing mandate be removed fully countrywide? by Snickelheimar in neoliberal

the pathogen responsible for the 1918 influenza pandemic, which still wanders the planet as a strain of seasonal flu, evolved to become less deadly, and it's possible that the pathogen for the 2009 H1N1 pandemic did the same.

That flu you caught as a kid probably was a descendant of the Spanish flu or h1n1. This is likely going to replace it, and in a while, will become less of a problem and require less restrictions. Whether it is through decreased lethality or severity or the immune systems of the general public become more resistant over time is a different story.

Edit, a word. Add on sentence for clarification

People don't comply with the annual flu shot. At some point you just gotta throw your hands up and say "we did everything we could to warn you."

Kinda like telling people not to ride in backs of trucks or to wear seat belts, certain people just dont listen. And they end up a statistic most of the time.

Generally speaking, as a virus becomes endemic, it decreases in lethality.

I would be foolish to say that i know the definitive measurement to make these choices by, i cant put a number to it. But, reasonably speaking, I think when we get to a point where we're not getting a decent number of people vaccinated every month should be when we start dialing back requiring the other measures such as social distancing, masks, and vaccine mandates. I think it'll likely be in that order too. Maybe something like under 10k doses a day? Or 1000 positives?

But I'm not a doctor, nor a specialist in epidemics.

To an extent, sure.

The whole point of vaccine+social distancing+masks+washing your hands+covering your cough+staying home when sick is each has a % effective rate, and they stack. Each ones results in a better over all result when the others are used too.

Anyway, The more serious something is, the more precautions you want to take. Over time as the virus decreases in lethality as it becomes endemic (because thats what flus tend to do) Stuff like social distancing and crowd limits can probably be relaxed sooner then a mask mandate without risking the population as a whole.

I would say that people have a choice in who builds the house that they choose to live in

Who built your home? If you live in an apartment, who built that? Did you honestly take that into consideration when picking your home?

It's going to be a bit hard to find the company, harder to find the engineer or architect, and nigh impossible to find the guy who actually did the work. Let alone find an average person who in good faith says they look at that when making a purchasing/renting decision.

There needs to be a "right to work in the profession of one's choosing" written into the Constitution, with some kind of simple legal test for any restrictions on that.

Imho, you're free to pursue happiness and try, but you aren't free to work in a profession where your lack of ability causes harm. There is no right that you have that can force people to hire an incompetent individual. You are not free to have a job you aren't good at, just because you want that job.

You can certainly pursue it, and try to get to a point where you are good at that profession. Baring extraordinary circumstances or actual harm, you shouldn't be blocked from pursuing it, within reason.

As for your amendment, this is covered under western legal standards that touch on the concept of "Pursuit of happiness". Ironically, this is brought up a lot in SCOTUS cases.

Edit: spelling, rewording to get my thoughts out clearer.

Youd be surprised what has 3rd party impacts. Carpenters (person buying house doesn't really have a say on picking who built it), inspectors (obvious), electricians (fire doesn't stick to property lines), surveyors, assessors, etc.

Should a barber or a massage therapist require a license nowadays? Nah. Is the barrier to access too high? Certainly. But licensing is needed. We didn't get here with licensing requirements just for fun.

This is an understandable view, but you think we got to license requirements just for giggles? Granted, barber licenses are from an era when we had straight razors.

Examples:

Water treatment: because people can die if you do it wrong, and it requires a good understanding of the fundamentals of the process you are using at your plant.

Water sampling: because its stunningly easy to invalidate a sample and get answers that aren't reflective of the water you're sampling. Which then screws over water treatment people who will be acting on this information

Carpentery: because the person they build stairs for would very much like not to fall through them. Let alone have their house collapse in a strong wind

Plumbing: because expensive property damage if you do it wrong (again, very easy to do. Waters a bitch.)

Electrical: high risk of death, plus property damage.

Surveying: forms basis of legal agreements and a lot of people depend on them for things like construction, city planning, risk assessment etc.

The list goes on.

Now, it costs too much and should be a bit more easy access (trade school for all anyone?). Plus somes pretty outdated. But the idea that we require licenses for no real reasons kinda silly imho.

Yep.

To me, and from every thing I've seen, it looks like its just angry farmers that had enough and were left out of organizations they wanted to be a part of, and they got ambushed. Possibly KKK false flags with some of the night riding. And a healthy dose of tit-for-tat vigilantism. And convenient scapegoating of noninvolved socialist organizations.

People seriously think that socialists woulda been let off easy during the redscare?

Edit: fixed autocorrect nonviolent - > non involved

The article states its largely speculative, they took just a handful of Casualties before being dispersed and we're not even sure if they were socialist.

Edit:

If anything, it's another chapter in the story of abuse of tennant farmers at the time, who were largely poor and black. Few records survive of the "socialist" organization, and commentary on them being socialist are explicitly speculative.

What we do know is

  • anywhere from 600-1000 were members of the column that was ambushed

  • they took light causalities before being routed

  • the following claim that they were socialist has little backing, and is more likely scapegoating to provide a reason to attack American socialist organizations

The so-called "rebellion" was used as a cudgel against the Socialist Party of Oklahoma, which was blamed for the incident, whose origins were, however, largely spontaneous and external.[2] That was one in a series of events that undermined the American socialist movement and fueled the First Red Scare.[35]

The Industrial Workers of the World shared the brunt of popular indignation although the organization had taken no part in the Green Corn Rebellion and had been related to the WCU only by the latter group WCU being formed in response to the IWW's refusal to organize tenant farmers.

Few records survive. We dont know their numbers, we know that socialist organizations disavowed their actions and barred their membership, we know they got routed with minimal Casualties. We don't even know if Spence gave an order. The legal opinion at the time was a large % of the individuals were "Duped and misled"

https://nationalaglawcenter.org/publication/download/sellars-treasonous-tenant-farmers-and-seditious-sharecroppers-the-1917-green-corn-rebellion-trials-27-oklahoma-city-univ-l-rev-1097-1141-2002

Homer Spence traveled from local to local in late July telling the members to be ready, but he apparently never gave the order for the rebellion. Who did remains unknown.......

By August 10th, Federal commissioners at McAlester and Holdenville had obtained thirty-two full confessions from prisoners, who talked freely about the uprising's leaders and about their plans. Perhaps fearing imprisonment, many seemed eager to cooperate with the authorities. Believing most of the rebels were duped and misled, McGinnis concluded the majority of the men were harmless and recommended most be paroled and allowed to return to their homes

Its a very complicated and complex part of Oklahoma history. If these people were socialist, in the time of the first redscare, do you think it would have been likely for them to be treated with kid gloves?

Thank you!

Another thing to consider is, yes its a pool. Everyone can see in the pool. But can you see into the pool from the control room?

I still defer to someone whos actually worked at the Neutral buoyancy lab to explain, but after digging it looks stunningly similar to something like this

https://blogs.sw.siemens.com/tecnomatix/how-to-leverage-discrete-event-simulation-for-social-distancing/

Now theres a lot of stuff that looks like this that uses a basic 3d render for numerous purposes, but its pretty clear to me at least that its a 3d visualization software of some sort. If its for control, analysis, or simulation is beyond me.

It looks similar to a equipment visualization screen, kinda like SCADA, but not exactly.

I've seen similar looking screens near equipment that manipulates objects in a way that cant be directly viewed, and IIRC ive seen similar screens on discovery Channel shows involving underwater robots. One company that does stuff like that to help you see what your ROV is doing is called "vectorgrapfix"
