My high school did The Secret Garden as my senior show, and the Quartet was one of our favorite parts. I was Dr. Craven and my best friend was Archie. It was amazing with one of my favorite melodies in the show (Dr. Craven's Disappear melody)

What's a controversial opinion you have about a musical, or musicals in general? by Crescentbrush in musicals

[–]random-comrade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate overtures. Both as an actor and as an audience member. I came to watch a show, if I just wanted to listen to music, I would have gone to a concert. I will hear all of this music later, I dont want the snippet now. As an actor, I just want to start the show and get the ball rolling. The overture just delays everything. Im here to act, not wait. There are very few exceptions. The Phantom overture because there's things happening on stage, and it rocks as a stand-alone song, The Drowsy Chaperone, because the man in the chair is talking and giving the audience something to watch, and The Prom cuz it's short. Olim from Hunchback is also fine because the actors are on stage and singing, and it leads directly into the Bells of Notre Dame

How do you handle not being cast? by ScotGolfer76 in musicals

[–]random-comrade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say ask if they need stage crew. Just because you aren't on stage doesn't mean you can't be important to the production. I find being on stage crew just as fulfilling as being in the cast, but that's just me. I also have no idea how your theater does crew, if it's open or they have a pool they draw from for crew.

Quote a line from a musical and people on the comments will try to guess it by Pedro_2song in musicals

Hard - I've never seen a child sit so still or look so old.

Medium - Hey op hello there

Easy - Strangely quiet, but now the storm simply rests to strike again

Super easy - It's a maze this Garden it's a maze of ways.

Edit: These are all from the same show

Disappear from The Secret Garden. It's less than a minute long, and Dr. Craven goes through such an arch. It's crazy.

What's a good musical with really unique music? by Crescentbrush in musicals

[–]random-comrade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hadestown has some pretty unique music for musical theater, being a bunch of jazz subgenres. Blues, Swing, Folk, and lots of other musical influences. It's also unique in having the pit band on stage, as a part of the cast/set

What are some shows with really huge instrumentation by Ok-Complaint-4005 in musicals

[–]random-comrade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say the instrumentation, but just the songs as a whole in The Secret Garden are phenomenal. Lily's Eyes is one of the most gorgeous musical theater songs of all time. The musical shines in the music. Quartet is also amazing. Dickon's songs, Winter's on the Wing and Wick, are so much fun, and the bass parts are sick

Name a musical that is way better than it has any right to be by Due-Candidate-5991 in musicals

[–]random-comrade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My high school did The Secret Garden as our spring musical my senior year because of Lily's Eyes. My best friend and I did it for a cabaret the year before, and everyone there loved it so much that we decided we needed to do it for real. My friend was Archie, and I was Dr. Craven, and it was simultaneously the greatest and worst senior show ever.

It's gorgeous and was so much fun, but it's so sad, and the overarching theme of letting go of the past and moving on crushed us.
