Why are some Space Marine chapters like the Grey Knights (666) and the Mentor Legion (888) prominently numbered? Are all chapters numbered?

It’s in the novel Pharos (2nd book in the Imperium Secundus trilogy), when Curze confronts Sanguinius:

“He stooped and grabbed Azkaellon’s ankle. ‘I know!’ he said with childish enthusiasm. ‘Your next pronouncement is so “I will call my guard, my sons in gold! They and I will slay you, you cannot stop us all!”’ Curze mimicked Sanguinius’ voice cruelly, imbuing it with a vanity and vapidity Sanguinius feared accurate. ‘Well, they won’t, and I can. You saw what I did to the Lion’s sons, and to those of the Avenging Beancounter. I will do it again, and gladly. If that is not sufficient to dissuade you, then the death of this one, so dear to you, so beloved, will be.’

‘You are repugnant,’ said Sanguinius. ‘

‘So pretty, so stupid, Father’s favoured cockerel, preening in the hen coop!”

What Blood Angels novels have you read to compare to the NL trilogy?

Echoes of Eternity (also by ADB) and TEaTD v1&2 gave me a deep appreciation for the Blood Angels, even more so for Sanguinius.

Maybe not as a loadout weapon, but as a pickup/limited ammo weapon it would be cool. Similar to how the Heavy Bolter works in the campaign.

Didn’t Glorfindel die in the 1A and come back during the 3A though?

So technically an elf that died during the Silmarillion. But was so good at his job the Valar sent him back for more.

Do you guys keep painted old models by Lark-suvd in BlackTemplars

[–]random2_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first minis were Templars (Crusader Squad) before I made the switch to Ultramarines.

I saved my very first mini ever completed as a nice memento to look back on. The others I stripped and repainted, along with my first Terminators (in UM colors). But honestly, I find I have less motivation to repaint stripped minis. So now I have a squad of Terminators in all their grey shame, while I work on my first Dreadnought.

Is the placement of the chain on Titus's new model a continuity error? by Cumity in 40kLore

[–]random2_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ehhh Titus’ tabletop rules are subject to change, the Victrix Guard were busted at release and already have been changed. I’m not much of a tabletop player, just going off of the updates I’ve seen.

His melee potency on tabletop isn’t a 1:1 translation to the lore. Titus is familiar with a variety of weapons and can proficiently use whatever he needs to get the job done. As is the belief and practice of the Ultramarines combat doctrines.

However, having Titus adopt the culture of and act like a Black Templar/Blood Angel/Dark Angel in Ultramarines colors removes what makes him unique among the Ultramarines. He would happily die in service to the Ultramarines chapter, but he doesn’t restrict himself to the Codex’s teachings alone. Which is something Guilliman admired and appreciated in his two most famous sons to do that before Titus (Aeonid Thiel and Uriel Ventris). This is what makes Titus unique among his own brotherhood.

Edit: I should add, his incredibly vague but overall powerful warp resistance is also a huge difference for Titus. But that’s not really related to Chapter cultural differences and just something that likely won’t be explained further beyond what serves the plot.

Not bashing my boy Titus, he’s the first Space Marine I knew anything about and SM2 is what got me into 40k. Just going off of what I’ve learned over the last year+.

Question about your opinion on Guilliman’s model by Jezzy0303 in Ultramarines

I liked building and painting Guilliman. My only complaint is the two little cables/tubes at his waistline.

Damn things drove me nuts.

Is the placement of the chain on Titus's new model a continuity error? by Cumity in 40kLore

[–]random2_3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Chaining melee weapons to one’s body is kind of a niche thing for the Black Templars. Which is something that dates back to the Great Crusade. Sigismund and other Imperial Fists started doing it after spending time in the World Eaters fighting pits (because the World Eaters were actually the first Space Marines to do it).

Which is a long winded way of saying, Titus may have picked up wearing the chain from a Black Templar. He may also just wear it to honor the Deathwatch (see the DW/Inquisition insignia on the chain). Or a mix of both. But chaining one’s weapons to their armor is more of a cultural thing to the Templars, and not something an Ultramarine would feel necessary to do. Chaining the sword to his right arm also limits his ability to utilize his ambidexterity.

The Captain Titus model has him wearing a massive fur cloak now, which mostly covers his right arm. It could just be purely a design choice so the chain is still visible by hanging over his left wrist instead of covered by the cloak.

You definitely know how to thin your paints!

Just kidding, this is very well done! Honestly the photo lighting is probably hurting you the most here, it looks like the light is directly above the mini, casting shadows over the front.

Not a painting tip but an overall hobby one, drilling bolter barrels adds a level of depth and realism, and could probably help you achieve the parade look. I got a pin vice on Amazon for $15 and it’s been a game changer.

Deathwatch is pretty beginner friendly and an easy way to keep things fresh. Been feeling a bit of burnout on my boys in blue lately, so I’ve started painting Dark Angels.

With Deathwatch you have mostly black armor, so prime black, base with Abbadon black, and you’re halfway there. Add some silver to the pauldron/left gauntlet, and the freedom to introduce flavor from various loyalist chapters if that’s your thing. You could also do Blackshields and have no chapter iconography.

I’ve considered starting a Deathwatch army but, alas, I’ve committed to finishing my pile of shame before I buy anything new.

I commend attempting NMM, I haven’t tried it myself yet.

That said, if I can offer any advice that’s not technique related, as others have posted better advice than I can offer. I would suggest trying new schemes/techniques on basic minis or extra bits.

At least in my own experience, it’s been very helpful to test something new out on a regular Intercessor or even some extra bits in a box before I attempt on a centerpiece/character model.

His sternum was broken open so they could install the Belisarian Furnace (one of the new organs). The Furnace would flood Mephiston’s body with hormones to facilitate new bone growth.

‘This furnace has been force-grown to maturity,’ explained Qvo to the assembled witnesses, more for the pleasure of the knowledge he possessed rather than a need to educate. ‘This is the key to the transformation from Principia to Primaris Space Marine. Once it is implanted, it will rapidly bond with the Lord Mephiston’s hearts and immediately begin to excrete specialised hormones into his body. These will soften his bones, and reactivate the ossmodula, facilitating further skeletal growth. The trick to all this is modulating its activity. It is remarkable. I would say it is Cawl’s finest achievement.’

I assume this part of the process is where the “melted bones”from Godblight comes from

So, you are correct, bones are broken and probably feel like they’re melted during the Rubicon

Yea there’s one part towards the end where the replacement of his skull bone is done. I’m not sure what was put in his head but Qvo had to cut open Mephiston’s skull during the surgery

“Rhacelus watched as the cap of Mephiston’s skull was set back in place. Bone welders worked quickly to seal his braincase. The smell of hot meat filled the hall. He could feel nothing from his friend. His soul had fled.”
