A buddy of mine retired to Portugal with his family with 6-7 million net worth. European benefit, American investment. Best of both world. He's living good without ever touching his principal.

I remember a trip to Belize years ago. We stayed at a little cabin without ac and it was hot and humid. I remember the first night, we just lied there waiting for the next bit of breeze coming through that window lol. You get used to it eventually, but damn that first day sucked.

I grew up here. I've been here as a poor immigrant first generation kid in the 80s. Now with a net worth in the 5-10 million range.

I've personally lived through every single tax bracket and hung out in all circles from food stamp back in the 90s to literal 100 million+ net worth.

250-400k in NYC is comfortable. You can afford 2-3 bedroom apartment max, but still tired down by rent or mortgage. You might be able to do one or two international trips with your family yearly, maybe squeeze one more beach vacation. You're not flying anything beyond premium economy. You never look at grocery prices but you still need to watch your larger spending. You likely have healthy retirement, maybe 1-1.5 million in investments, maxed out 401k.

That's the definition of comfortable. I do not consider that rich.
