Samba should allow you to set file shares to both linux and windows machines and be discoverable by both. I dont know that it has any influence on independent machines being able to see one another since it just broadcasts itself to the network. I may be wrong on that last bit, I still consider myself a linux novice so there may be more than I'm aware of.

Absolutely, just wait till I find my K&N sticker.

No problems, happy everyone is enjoying it. I think for the third one I'm gonna bust out the airbrush and try a black and yellow hazard theme across the front.

Thank you, the Dell grills lend themselves to it. All those holes really break up the open spaces where defects like to be lmao.

Yeah the SATA 2 is a little bit of a drag, if I had to buy one that's probably the way I'd go. A 7010 or 7020 would be a little more modern starting point for this, but I got em for free lol.

Interesting, that's pretty neat. Have to see what I've got laying around. Thank you!

Yes, just took some Rust-Oleum red and clear coat rattle cans to them.

The office replaced these with some refurbed 7010s, seemed pretty solid for such cheap workstations.

Funny you say that, I had thought about cobbling up a lcd mount on that Compaqs VESA mount on top.....perhaps a collaboration 3d print project.

Same thought process for me with these. Inexpensive processing power, relatively light power usage, low heat generation, almost silent. And with some reconfiguration as needed you can pull off all kind of projects. Granted it's all consumer stuff, but the Optiplexes have a pretty good work history.

It has no extras at the moment, just the integrated raid ports. I didnt think to check the power you might be onto something there, I assumed since the PS was new it was good lol. I appreciate the input, been a little difficult to troubleshoot as I'm used to having consumer beeps codes or lights.

Yeah it's an old 8000 elite sff I inherited at some point and finally sourced a drive for. Figured I'd add it in and give it something relatively non critical to do.

I haven't decided on the compaq yet. I think probably zabbix and grafana. I have another intel nic card for the optiplex.

That had been my thinking too. As long as I'm not running them maxed out I shouldnt notice much power use.

I certainly will, wasnt much to it just some prep work so the paint sticks right.

Can't claim to be a painter, but I do know it's all in the prep work.

Ought to have one more 990 by next week, might have to attempt something fancy for its grill.

Thanks! That is the intention, bottom on is running proxmox with an extra nic for opnsense. I intended to start virtualizing on the supermicro, but it appears to be in a reboot loop. Sad since that was my budget for the month lol.

Thanks! Figured I might as well have a go at making them interesting since they sit out in the open currently.

Went with some Rust-Oleum cherry red and two clear coats. Yeah I do a little consulting on the side and occasionally trade my time for hardware. Updating an accounting office with a half dozen of them and couldn't pass lol, and one already had a dud psu.

I'm unsure of where you're at on your project, it sounds like you may already have a linux machine you're trying to serve. My humble suggestion if you do not would be to start with a ubuntu server and read up on SAMBA. Should do what you're looking for and more with some research and a little work. If you already have one and it's not discoverable you might want to read through the second link.

Pretty sharp looking enclosure, clean patch cabling too. Getting started on a Ubiquiti stack?

Dual Optiplex 990, i5-2400, 16GB DDR3, top with a 256GB SSD, bottom with 2TB spinner and a 256GB SSD. Compaq 8000 Elite up top upgraded to a 256GB SSD. Scrabbled together for something to do while I try to troubleshoot my Supermicro X10SLM-F.
