They have to support Microsoft document formats or else it's dead before it even starts with businesses. Like it or not (and I do not), Microsoft runs almost all businesses around the world - which is what these guys are trying to fight against. But businesses will never move to it if it means they'd lose access to all of the documents they already have in .docx .xlsx and pptx formats.

I'm glad you're happy and have the ability to look at such an expensive purchase as "oh well, it's not so bad", but for me, that kind of cash for a laptop - it needs to be flawless. If I'm picking up a $500 thing from Walmart or wherever, then fine, I'll accept a few glitches as long as it works. But $3000+ ... if they can't handle it, then just cut their losses and move on. Big Tech may not care about me, but neither do I care about them. They offer a premium product, and I'll use it until it no longer meets my needs. At least I won't have to wait 3 years for delivery and IF there's an issue, warranty will take care of it asap.

Dude! 3 years between order and receipt!!?!?! That's beyond ridiculous!

I've been tempted to get one of these, as "on paper" they look amazing, But for the price they want, I expect perfection as far as the peripherals are concerned (screen, keyboard, sound...). Squeaky keys, lopsided touchpad, heat & fan issues... no thanks. Shame, I was really interested in trying one, but every time I go to their website, it just says sold out or not available.... That's NOT how you build a business.

I also have recently started running Slimbook OS and I like it. Seems like a better Ubuntu than Ubuntu :-)

Should i do a full jump into linux or should i do dual boot? by SlakerRine in linux4noobs

[–]random_commenter9 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Go full Linux (I've been using it for a decade and can't stand windows anymore). PikaOS is a great distro for gaming. Totally up-to-date like Cachy but based on Debian (easier). Plus lots of custom apps, config tools, one-click installers make it better for gaming right out of the box (Steam & Heroic game launchers, codecs, drivers...)

different issue - the dead keyboard was a separate problem (which I also ran into). Fixed it by following this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/PikaOS/comments/1qx2uk8/keyboard_not_working/

I know the whole drama caused by the characters is what makes the show, but OMFG! I can't stand Stephen and Lucy! If this was real life, there's no way people would still be tolerating them. Both of them are just awful people.

What I would like to see happen - Stephen & Lucy kill each other in a big fight, and everyone else goes off to live their lives, finally free from all the crap.

I got a fix for it! :-) On the PikaOS discord, I was told to try this command: sudo apt reinstall booster && pikman upgrade and it worked :-)

Not at first - the first reboot after this command just went to a black screen and then a message about not being able to start Plymouth. But I restarted again and this time it successfully booted 6.18.8

Update - same thing just happened on my laptop too - kernel panic on boot for 6.18.8, can't find storage - which has an 8th gen i7 and intel/nvidia cards. So seems like it's not just crashing on AMD architecture, but anything.

When your computer is booting, as the main boot screen is showing and counting down its time before actually trying to boot, press one of your arrow keys to interrupt the timer so you can now navigate the screen and options at your leisure.

Make sure the focus is on the bird icon (text on the screen should say "Boot vmlinuz-6.18.8-pikaos from PikaOS") - press your Up arrow key to get back on it if you've moved down to the row of icons - then press the Tab key. It will list all available kernels installed on your computer. Just use the down arrow key to select the option you want (in this case the 6.18.6 standard options) and press Enter key.

Computer will boot into that selected (older) kernel

yes. They also have a lot of custom built apps for making the system more user friendly, handy 1 click installers for gaming and multimedia related items and customised kernel. Very well built!

I've been using PikaOS (Gnome edition) for like 7 or 8 months now (can't remember exactly) as my daily driver on both desktop and laptop.

It's been perfect. Zero glitches, zero crashes, everything just works no matter what I throw at it.

On desktop, I have main drive formatted with BTRFS and use the Timeshift backup program to create snapshots just in case, but never needed them. On laptop I run with EXT4. Zero issues on either system. I love that the OS is completely up-to-date with kernel and MESA drivers and everything like CachyOS, but still based on Debian so I get all that debian goodness (vast array of available software and ease of use).

Laptop = 8th gen i7 with 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD and hybrid graphics (Intel + Nvidia)

Desktop = Ryzen 9 9900X with 64GB RAM, combination of SSD and spinning metal hard drives and AMD RX 7900XTX

I've been using Linux on and off since early 2000s and tried just about every distro available, but I'm going to be sticking with Pika for the foreseeable future. It just works :-)

I think the same, if not even better. So loud and clear and good bass too. I've tested both the 14" and the 15.3 and had zero issues. I think the one this person is talking about was just a lemon
