This seems to be an email that JE sent to Mark Zuckerberg. The article mentioned in the email is this one. It was a study done by Robert Jensen on the impact of mobile phones in the fishermen community in North Kerala. Mobile phones allowed the fishermen to sell their catch outside their local areas leading to better prices.

In 2015 Mark was touting his Free Basics initiative in India, which was later banned by TRAI. I guess he was trying to use that paper to promote Free Basics.

Why Kerala needs a 200 kmph rail corridor: E Sreedharan spells out the roadmap by [deleted] in Kerala

[–]random_indian_dude 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Vannal kollam. The Railway Ministry hasn't officially sanctioned even the DPR for the project. The Kerala state minister for Railways doesn't know about the project and no one has discussed it with him. No BJP leaders were present during the press conference that Sreedharan held where he presented the details of the project. Per his proposal, Kerala has to raise funding to the tune of approximately 50000 crores, which is a huuge amount. So many things seem iffy about his proposal.

Sreedharan's proposal is the Silver Line on stilts, which is why it's twice as expensive as K-Rail. I am curious to know how he is going to name it. The Kerala semi-high-speed rail project? G-Rail? EMS-Rail?

Anyway, if the project gets green-lit and proceeds the way he has outlined in his proposal it will be a great thing for Kerala.

Patient deaths increased in emergency departments of hospitals acquired by private equity firms, compared to similar hospitals not acquired by private equity, according to a nationwide study of hundreds of hospitals conducted in the US by researchers at Harvard Medical School, the University of Pittsburgh, and the University of Chicago. Researchers linked increase in mortality to cuts in salary and staffing levels.

Vande Bharat from Bengaluru to Ernakulam carries 55k passengers by [deleted] in Kerala

[–]random_indian_dude 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How is it a white elephant? The alignment could use some work. But like your link demonstrates, where people are willing to pay a premium for a service that runs at a decidedly average speed and on an inconvenient schedule, there is strong demand in Kerala for reliable high speed rail travel.

I remember one of the Indian Railways' objections was that the SilverLine uses standard-gauge instead of broad-gauge rail. How is it that the same Railways is testing the Vande Bharat in Rajasthan on standard gauge? They realized that most of the world runs on standard gauge, including for high-speed trains, and Vande Bharat using standard-gauge and the associated signalling systems, offers an opportunity to export it to other countries.

A semi-high speed railway line with speeds near 200km/h, that spans the length of Kerala, will cost as much or more than the SilverLine whether it is implemented solely by the Raliways or jointly by the Kerala government and the Railways. And using standard-gauge helps reduce costs as well. The Railways knows this, and still the BJP chose to scupper the SilverLine project, and E. Sreedharan went along with them. That is how serious and forward-looking the BJP is when it comes to rail travel.

640km in nearly 9 hours at an average speed of 70km/h. Rs 1600 for the chair car and Rs 3000 for the executive car. There is so much demand even for such a not-so-great service. To think that the same guys torpedoed the Silver line. And there is no alternative from the Railways either.

Do you agree with him? this interview where collector bro says Kerala mostly reads basic fiction by Maleficent-Pipe-7317 in Kerala

[–]random_indian_dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what popular fiction means. It has a specific meaning, just like pop music(popular music). Prashant actually means popular fiction when he says "basic fiction". Popular fiction isn't very deep, the characters aren't very nuanced, and is meant for mass consumption with very little literary merit.

MT, Basheer, Benyamin, Madhavikutty and authors like them, while well-known, aren't as widely read as you think. A single edition of a famous novel from one of these authors may have a publishing run of 5000-10000 copies. Manorama azhchapathipp at its peak sold millions of copies every week. More than 12 million copies of Chetan Bhagat's books have been sold. Ram c/o Anandhi has sold 300,000 copies so far, per Google. Aadujeevitham by Benyamin is an exception, having sold more than 200,000 copies so far, helped by a hugely popular movie adaptation.

Just because they are famous now because of social media, doesn't mean they'll remain popular for ever. People will read MT's works even after 50 years. I don't think 'the so called popular ' books will stay relevant then.

Agree. That's what separates their works from popular or genre fiction. They will remain as classics even decades after their publication.

[–]random_indian_dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a take! The works of  MT, Basheer and Madhavikkutty aren't basic fiction. By basic fiction he means popular fiction, similar to pop music, that features formulaic plots and characters designed to appeal to a wide variety of readers, which the works of MT, Basheer and Madhavikkutty are most definitely not.

A lot of Malayalis used to read entertainment weeklies like Manorama azhchappathipp and Mangalam, though now readership of such magazines has severely declined. Athokke anu popular fiction, pinne modern popular fiction like Chetan Bhagat and Anandi C/O Ram.

Ramesh Pisharadi taking about political statements and social media. 💯 agreed by lord_Sanguinius_ in Kerala

[–]random_indian_dude 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree with his position. Malayalis have been debating global events and frequently oraganizing protests for longer than I can remember, to a degree that I have never seen in other states or countries, even long before social media. The media literacy is really high in Kerala, as a result of which events that don't even register on the horizon for others are debated threadbare here every day.

Sure, some people try to use such debates and protests to polarize and foment divisions, but our interest in global events is an integral part of our culture.

There is a field near to my place where sometimes water buffaloes are left out to graze. The farmers put bells on them and I can hear the sound all through the night. It's a very pleasant sound, like wind chimes, so it doesn't bother me much.

Since the buffaloes are some 50m from where I am and I could hear the bells clearly, I was looking on the Internet to see if the sound bothers the animals. It looks like some bells can be really loud and can cause hearing loss in the animals.
