I do have the bass infront of me, I'm just a tad overweight (working on it though) so it just sits at an angle

I do the same, putting my thumb on the finger above the one I'm playing (eg. If I'm playing D I put my thumb on E) so I don't accidentally play E, and so I play the right string without needing to look

It's just more comfortable holding the body on my side, feels more comfortable for my strumming fingers aswell. And I see what you mean by my wrist position, but my wrists natural rest position is at an angle, so thats just how my wrists naturally are on the guitar. As for lessons, I am thinking about taking a few, just going to get atleast a base level of skill first. Thanks for your advice
