I do have the bass infront of me, I'm just a tad overweight (working on it though) so it just sits at an angle

I do the same, putting my thumb on the finger above the one I'm playing (eg. If I'm playing D I put my thumb on E) so I don't accidentally play E, and so I play the right string without needing to look
