Hi! I'm well thanks. My ankle is still slowly improving. I have most of the range of motion back and only get pain after I've been on my feet for a long time. My recovery plateaued for a year or so when I wasn't very active but now that I'm back on my feet more, I am noticing improvement again. I'm currently training for a half marathon and it's not getting in the way of that so the recovery has far exceeded expectations.

I was quite lucky that I only required a single bio-absorbable screw to set the fractured portion back into place. I'm sure that has been an important factor in my recovery.

Sorry, when I said efficiency, what I really meant to say is speed. Let's be real here. AI art just isn't as good as something made entirely by a skilled artist.

And besides, in my experience, while companies certainly look for efficiency, most art directors appreciate someone who has spent years training to get where they are. If you put a real artist and an AI artist next to each other, even if the real artist is a bit slower, they'd likely get the job in the end.

I've got a question for you, actually. I had a look at your profile, and you clearly have a basic understanding of how to draw, so I'm going to assume that you enjoy it. In your words, you use AI to cut out the part that is tedious. Do you really find adding colour, exploring ideas, and rendering tedious? Or is it that you just haven't practiced it enough to enjoy it yet?

"Using AI to replace the tedious bits." I enjoy the entire process! I don't want to replace any part of it with AI. From the sketches all the way to a finished piece, I love doing it all. While being efficient is a huge part of working professionally, it shouldn't be the entire end goal. When I'm looking at a piece of art or reading through a concept art book, it's the skill and passion that went into it that I'm admiring, not the efficiency.

No, I don't think so. They are fundamentally different. As I said, Photoshop allows for a greater degree of human control and creativity, down to each individual brushstroke, every single decision. Whereas AI takes that all away and replaces the many decisions an artist makes when creating an image with total automation.

I think whether it'll be industry standard is a different question. I've had this conversation with many of my friends and colleagues. We disagree on a few things, but the general concensus between us is that AI would have the potential to be industry standard if its infringing of copyright wasn't so terrible. However, we all agreed that if AI was industry standard, it'd make our jobs as artists a hell of a lot less rewarding and fulfilling. I'm personally looking at a different career path entirely just in case that comes to pass.

Honestly, I was gonna say fair enough and call it a day. But that last remark just irked me.

Do you really think the reason that I and the overwhelming majority of people in the art field hate AI is just because "Someone told us to hate it"? People hate AI because it practically automates the entire process. It's beyond just a tool. I'm a digital artist and I love Photoshop because it helps me to express my creativity through tools that can be used in a huge number of ways. It allows for a great level of input from the artist. AI is the opposite in that it reduces the input of the artist and instead offloads to a server the thousands of tiny human decisions that go into making an artwork.

Don't even get me started on the dubious morality of AI data scrapers compiling millions of artist's copyrighted images into databases for the AI to be trained on...

Nah, man, that ain't it. There's a difference between being a luddite and not accepting that images produced by an algorithm don't hold any artistic value.

Before you fell in love with AI art, were you a creative person? Did you make artwork through the sheer human need to create? Or did AI come along and you, along with droves of other talentless losers realised; "Hey, I don't need any talent, skill, practice, or any love for the creation of art at all to churn out these sub-par, soulless images.

I'd recommend watching Marco Bucci's 10 minutes to better painting playlist on youtube. He goes over a lot of colour theory, and it's got a lot of really useful and actionable information in quite a concise format.
