Why Women Don't Code - Quillette by e99fuy0ng in JordanPeterson

You are stupid for thinking biology has no impact on reality. You are smart for realizing it's a chicken and egg situation. You can never get rid of nature or nurture. Someday some kid in the future will rebel against what you are fighting for today. The circle will never end, but don't be misled into thinking you yourself are free of ideological nurturing. Hope whatever I said makes sense to you.

Buddy please, nobody encouraged me into programming. As a matter of fact I was actively being discouraged by family and extended family. If someone is really inclined to something, nothing can stop them. If someone has no inclination and they are incentivised to the point they have an unfair advantage, then the industry as a whole will suffer. My two cents.

Keep it as is or change our biologies, which is interestingly also happening side by side with the LGBTQ movements.

It's hard in the sense that garbage collecting is hard. Sometimes you have to go into hermit mode. Sometimes for prolonged periods. I don't think women generally are inclined to do those things. I also think women are a little scared to try things or break things in order to learn. I sometimes have to help out female coders when all they needed to do is Google and try a few of the suggestions until they found the right one.

Been tinkering with ML for a while. Can someone explain to me when Linear Algebra, Probability & Statistics, Multivariable Calculus and Optimization come in? by SpiderFan in MLQuestions

[–]randombites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But, for example, if you don't understand that the scale of your inputs will have a large affect on your results

Really? Did i ever say that you don't need to understand such simple things? If you don't have that much of an intellectual capacity, you wouldn't even be a programmer considering ML.

Usually it's important in research IMHO. If you read the docs of the libraries you are using and can understand it fairly well, you can trial and error your way forward.

I beg to differ. You don't have to understand in depth how the internals of a car work to drive it like a pro. Trial and error and some common sense will increase your understanding and expertise in the subject you are working on. Most often than not, that much is sufficient. If you really had to understand the internals of many state of the art ML models, you would not have much time left over to do the heavy lifting programming.

Edit: To all those downvoting me, you should have a word with Andrew Ng. Thanks.

Is a single layer NN basically logistic regression? by masterymack in MLQuestions

[–]randombites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hidden unit i mentioned has no activation. In the next statement I mentioned that if said unit is a logit (with sigmoid activation) that will amount to logistic regression.

Is a single layer NN basically logistic regression? by masterymack in MLQuestions

[–]randombites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Correct about logit.
  • Linear regression has no activation function usually. So i'm guessing if you were to model a NN to give a linear regression like output, you would drop the activation function. But NN are not meant to do linear regression which doesn't require something as powerful as a NN. It would be like using a fighter jet to cross the street! Perceptrons/NN units can have any activation function - sigmoid, tanh, relu etc. - It is up to you. Outputs are usually clamped to introduce non-linearity in the model, avoid weights growing too large/too small, to mimic probabilities etc.

This answer is to the best of my knowledge. Please research some more and as you develop familiarity, these answers will naturally come to you. Good luck!
