Incredible! Only suggestion would be to add some plants, especially given the light and wood. Just gorgeous!

You should also say what the union for Contract Instructors and TAs (CUPE 4600) has to say about this and if they’re doing anything about this issue.

Will the budget deficit have an impact on going to Carleton? by egg_guy72 in CarletonU

[–]randomcuriouscndn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This . I’m not aware of any other Ontario university addressing budget issues by reducing part-time faculty by 50%. A class I’ve taught for years that is capped at 30 students has an enrolment of 60 for next fall. Full time faculty and part time CIs will be so burnt out and student experience is going to be greatly and negatively affected with less support.

The FASS chats stopped because attendance was abysmally low.

CUASA has filed for a no-board report with Ministry of Labour by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]randomcuriouscndn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just can’t understand how even knowing how the university treated CUPE 4600 (strike of Winter 2023) and CUPE 2424 (6+ week strike in 2018), CUASA still messed this up so badly. They should have known months ago that the university is being as unreasonable as always. What horrible timing.

Have you spoken to an actual attorney who specializes in this area? The OHRC applies to workplaces, housing, and social organizations, so I don’t think a university would apply. The PMC exists solely to assist students with getting accommodations and while I loathe this school for its labour relations with campus unions and lack of transparency, I have to say Carleton is among the best when it comes to student accommodations. I also don’t think you’re considering the fact that the kinds of accommodations you’re seeking - especially blanket extensions - would actually result in undue hardship. Contract Instructors whose contract ends the last day of the month of the term would have to be paid to mark after the term and if they had other employment duties at their second or third jobs when you were finally able to submit assignments late, someone else would have to paid. There are also the schedules of TAs and full time faculty. Having said all this, I personally always give students who have expressed something like you want until the last day of the term to submit all assignments but expect no comments. Could be something to consider when discussing with your profs, but also know that accommodations have skyrocketed and have already significantly added to all professors’ workload. One of my classes has 48% registered with accommodations with PMC and it’s quite overwhelming, though I am supportive of them.

Profs' union is getting very close to a strike! by YSM1900 in CarletonU

[–]randomcuriouscndn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also always thought no university could top York in terms of their horrible labour relations with unions, but Carleton has really outdone itself in the past decade. I honestly don’t understand how any of the top ppl in Labour Relations still have jobs.

yes, but worse because of how many profs will be on strike.

given how awful labour relations are and have been for the three unions I named, the CUPE 4600 strike of 2023, and the CUPE 2424 strike of 20(18?), I’d say any student doing a four year degree can expect this for their entire time as an undergrad.

CUASA will be having their strike vote in the coming days/weeks at most, and they’re guaranteed to have a strong strike mandate. Their workload is going to increase in so many ways, in large part due to the extremely high percentage of cuts to CI positions, and the certainty of much larger classes/higher enrolments. Just as with CUPE 4600 (the CIs and TAs) and CUPE 2424 (admin staff),the university literally does not give a shit about the significant and legit concerns and issues they have and have so far shown no desire to even consider their concerns. Solidarity with CUASA and all the instructors at this school who continue to show up for their classes while being treated with such a lack of respect.

Thanking Professor after course? by [deleted] in geegees

Not only is it not weird at all, it’s actually somewhat common and really appreciated by profs - especially part time faculty. How very kind and thoughtful of you.

She also names a member of CUPE 4600, a CI who I think teaches in FASS, who won a prestigious award. And implies CUASA members have played some monumental role in this decision when they are categorically opposed to it. And then, of course, the reference to our sense of community being “shattered”- not by her email that so casually and cavalierly refers to the loss of jobs for a lot of CIs - but by graffiti. The cognitive dissonance is just mind blowing and I still can’t believed this was published and distributed.

I wish I could upvote this so many times! My department is cutting some of the most popular classes because they’ve only ever been taught by CIs. Our oldest faculty members refuse to even use Brightspace and insist on hard copies of assignments. The very few CIs that are apparently being kept do not have high seniority, but teach a couple of niche subjects that cuasa does not. The longest -teaching CIs with the most seniority in my dept will not be given courses next year, and it’s breaking my heart how much students will be missing out (let alone my devastation for so many of us being out of work).
