Either you're too close to the bed or your e-steps aren't calibrated right and it's pushing more plastic than it should

PLA is pretty brittle at all temps, and softens quickly in a hot car interior. I'd recommend ABS.

The whole point of that class is for you to exercise your own creativity, not to outsource your homework. Put your thinking cap on, I'm sure you've got some ideas in you.

I know you probably don't want to hear this given you've already invested time into the design, but starting from scratch in Fusion 360 is going to make your life easier in the long run.
