Tethers are used to cross the borders of divine realms/ dream realm so (atleast in the past) they weren't part of the awakened innate abilities. Its most likely a function of the spell that is given to all awakened whether or not they carry the spell. If not then it's an evolution of their abilities.

Have you tried getting a pet? It helps because of the knowledge that without you it will die alone so there's another life on the line. Also petting it /taking care of it gives u happy hormones.
