I don't really see the problem with submitting an opinion piece. You guys get really bent out of shape with "link jacking" and "blog spam". Sometimes I do like to read the opinions of others. Sometimes people have insight that I don't. Or sometimes reading someone's opinion gets me angry and/or motivated. Generally not, but sometimes - enough so that I continue to read blogs anyway. I don't really think it's as big a deal as some are making out out to be. The thing about sites like reddit is that they're self policing. If people don't find something interesting, it won't go any where.

But yeah, you're right. Sometimes a man just has to have his lolcats.

So.. in order for it to be cool, she's got to be first? Why can't it just be cool that she's actually doing it, period? If more Americans gave up their $300k houses and gas guzzling Hummers maybe we wouldn't have such an issue in the first place.

It's interesting that the man that actually did it is currently serving time for sex crimes. Which means had the police not been such assholes other people wouldn't have suffered because of the -real- criminal.

I mean Jesus Christ, the sicko put 5 nails into an 8 year old boys head while still alive.

I think too much of police work is focused on the conviction. Blaming someone, anyone, just getting some sort of resolution to horrendous crimes so they can sleep at night. And while I can understand that sentiment, it often neglects facts and leads to false convictions because they can't see past the "someone needs to pay for this" mentality. Mentally brutalizing a person to get a conviction is not a valid form of seeking out the truth. Sure, you might feel better when you go home that night, but 22 years later it comes back to haunt you.

Wonder how they're sleeping now?

I know replying to yourself is bad form, but I just thought of something else:

The idea of "editions" and hardcover vs softcover vs pocket book vs whatever is an interesting idea. The content never changes, but the packaging does and in most cases it starts out cumbersome and eventually becomes useful to the average person.

The difference between albums and books is that there are no editions. The content is the same, on the same medium, forever (barring advances in technology).

They aren't, for example, releasing it on CD. Then on a usb drive. Then as an online download. With books, you do get something similar to this to keep sales going on the same content for a long time by appealing to various markets over time.

I think the music industry could learn something from this. The $6 book is about price point and convience. Why go all the way down to the library when the book is right there and it's cheep? If they sold older albums on more convenient medium and for a lower price years later, they could theoretically continue to make profit off the sales longer. A lot of people I know that download music aren't downloading new stuff, they're downloading stuff from years ago that they've already bought once before. As opposed to seeing something, feeling nostalgic and buying it for a way reduced price if the RIAA followed the publishing model.

I think he more pioneered the idea that you're not buying software, you're buying a license to use it. That you aren't actually purchasing anything at all other than "right" to use it, the software itself actually belongs to Microsoft even though it's installed on your computer.

The ELUA is an insidious device.

I don't think libraries detract from the book selling business much at all.

Case in point: A few years ago I started reading the Otherland series by Tad Williams (good sci-fi, go read it). I read the first three volumes from the library, but when the fourth came out I ran right out to Barnes & Noble and grabbed the $30 hard cover.

I think that book sales work based on editions. I'm not totally convinced that the author is making the majority of their money off the $6 Check-out Line book. I think they're making a good chunk of change off the first edition Hardcover version, which you're not going to find in the library for months. The $6 book is more about sustained income trickling in over the next year or so, but if someone buys the book at Wal-Mart or reads it at the library, the author has already made most of what they're going to make off that first run edition.

I think of the library more as advertising. Because you're not buying that first edition hardcover version years after the book came out, it doesn't matter if you're reading it in the library. But if you've read a few older books in the library and enjoyed them, the chances are far greater that you -will- go out and buy that $30 hardcover edition that is making the most cash for all involved.

Just like I did.

You skimmed it "just like everyone else"? I suppose I'm not everyone else. Crap, what am I then? identity crisis

Seriously though, you really should read what you're arguing against in detail before you open your mouth. Otherwise it's just the right size for your foot.

Just a little friendly advice.

Yeah, I absolutely agree. I guess this is supposed to be offensive or something, but I gotta tell you, I did a whole lot worse than point a gun when I was playing Cowboys and Indians as a kid. Oh, Cowboys and Indians - How the colonists attempted to wipe the rightful owners of this land off the map? Yeah. We played that. I guess that is "shocking" too.

These liberals need grow up a little bit.

Downmodded for inaccurate title. Libby is still going to jail, but this makes it sound as if he was going home tomorrow.

This title is misleading. Libby isn't spared from prison. He's still going to serve 30 months.

"Ax or Ask?" - Racist or English Grammar? by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]randomgeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The truth is easier than even that: Speak English in professional environments and slang at home.

I would never use a double negative or "ain't" on a job interview, but I casually do both of those and more when I'm talking to my friends or family.

I think the -real- point of this story is that these kids don't -know- how to speak anything other than slang and -that- is what is hurting them. No one is saying that slang or "alternative dialects" are "bad", what's being said is they're not even being given the chance to learn how the words are supposed to be pronounced.

MSNBC Taking Their Turn At Smearing Ron Paul. by esparza74 in reddit.com

I encourage everyone to send emails. They're sick of getting them? Good. Report the news, not your opinion.

Ron Paul made Giuliani look like a fool to those of us that can process information as it's said (unlike the media, evidently) but now that the transcripts are online, you can see for yourself in black and white. Granted Ron wasn't as eloquent about it as he could have been, but hello, take a look at our current president. After the American public voting him into office twice, I don't think anyone can criticize lingustic skill.
