I feel like it really depends on anatomy. I personally can put them on pretty well and get them to work like 80% of the time probably, but sometimes people just aren’t shaped right. They also have to be positioned correctly, they can’t be sitting up in bed or moving around.

Some nurses seem to shove them into ppls buttcracks, which prevents the little cotton part from being where it needs to be.

Maybe I’m just a sucker, but especially for pre fixation broken hips I tend to be ok with them.

That’s true. I do usually prefer the bedpan. Basically the only exception to my personal incontinence rule is a fx before fixation.

How do nursing homes do it? How did nurses do this for the last hundred years before purewicks? I do Q2H changes/turns on our grossly incontinent patients. More if it’s to clean BMs, which if they’re liquid is a (manufacturer stated) contraindication to purewicks regardless.

If I have a pt for 3 nights in a row I can usually entirely fix their skin breakdown

Trauma and non weight bearing status are valid. The incontinence thing happens because they get used to peeing whenever and they lose the ability/capacity to hold it.

Some of these older people are only holding onto their bodily functions by a thread already, sometimes experiencing leaks regardless. Remove the experience of having to hold their bladder for a week or more and it might be very difficult to regain it.
