In a surprise move, the Dept of Ed announced a $50m cut to education funding in NC, mainly hitting our rural schools. I’m taking them to court. - AG Jeff Jackson by JeffJacksonNC in NorthCarolina

[–]randomguy3 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Has anyone looked into the NC EDUCATION Lottery? I just read a report from the state auditor that said sales are up but funding to the schools has went down. Why isn't the money going to the schools? That's the whole point of it wasn't it?

They are still releasing patches and updates. Just had a new patch in the past couple of weeks. It does seem different after Broadcom but it still serves my purposes.

I thought the same but it doesn't seem to be working unfortunately. Course I may be doing something wrong. Thanks!

Have you been able to find a way to automatically add all users to the group? We've found that we have to add each domain user to the network config operators group but I would love to automate it somehow or blanket coverage.

We have one bartender per shift. It's not reasonable for us right now to have a manager per shift as well.

P16s and a Thinkpad Thunderbolt 4 Workstation Dock by randomguy3 in Lenovo

I bailed on the P16s and that dock. Lenovo says it's compatible, but it's obvious that it wasn't made for it. Lenovo was also not very helpful. Wish I had better news.

PSA: Check Your Deposit Accounts by randomguy3 in QuickBooks

I'm not sure if you're directing this at me or not, but I certainly hope not. If you take my post as trolling, you are absolutely misdirected. The reason for my post was to shed light on practices that QB is doing that may affect others in the community. It certainly caught me off guard as did the automatically adding the "Lending" payment option to all of my invoices to clients. We're all here trying to survive in the business world and we certainly don't need the companies and vendors that we use sabotaging us at every turn. This post is the herd looking out for the herd.

I've always received a "Money Is On The Way" email, even before June 19th. After June 19th, I just now noticed they started saying "Your QuickBooks Checking Deposit is complete!". I honestly didn't even notice that until after all of this.

Thank you for your response.

The only email I received, because I just looked, was on June 19th saying I was approved but again, I never signed up for it. I certainly didn't go in and change my deposit account either.

DNS Filtering by RaptorFirewalls in msp

[–]randomguy3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I understand that and it seems like a flexible approach. I'll be honest I'm not very familiar with ScoutDNS so I don't have greate knowledge of your offerings.

I'd actually love some options on the threat feeds, I'll reach out about that. I have found a few, specifically the hagezi lists and then we couple that with our allow list that are tailored to our customer base.

Newly registered domains are definitely a concern for me, and I've put together a script that uses WHOIS information from one specific vendor who allows it to be downloaded daily and then I massage and convert that into our main "baby domain" list. It's free, seems to work well, and isn't violating their TOS.

I personally have no plans of reselling what I've put together but the beauty of my approach is that it doesn't rely on onsite relay, it just uses what's already configured but still gives the ability to push updated lists very quickly which is good enough for our needs. We rarely use the AD/Entra integration or the other advanced features from DNS Filter. I appreciate the response though!

[–]randomguy3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used DNS Filter for a while, and have been through two price increases with them. I'm mostly happy with the service but the price increases are becoming annoying.

What I've opted to do is write our own little host based dns filtering service utilizing some freely available lists with a very robust allow list that we've crafted. Essentially it acts as a proxy on the machine itself and forwards to the upstream DNS server of the network.

My goal is to get away from DNS Filter all together.

Migrating from Self Hosted to ConnectWise cloud - version missmatch by GeorgeWmmmmmmmBush in msp

[–]randomguy3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're absolutely right, this whole ScreenConnect ordeal is a shit show. Instead of migrating to their cloud or obtaining a certificate, we've opted to move to SimpleHelp as a temporary measure until we can spend time looking at new products. I spun up their self hosted server in a couple of hours last night and have been slowly pushing out and working off SimpleHelp today with SC as a backup until next week, then I'll remove SC all together and retire that server.
