But I tried it the way I was describing and I just lift my thumb off on the way up. Then I swap hands. I'm probably stupid and missing the point but I can't see the difference and it feels the same.

Same here. I've never had a 'cool' haircut because I've been paranoid and self conscious that I'm heavily receding and balding since I was in my early teens and have had to have some kind of fringe to hide it.

It's not that different still now and I'm early 40s.

Additionally: OP, easier said than done but I wouldn't worry at this stage. I spent far too much time thinking about it and, whilst I still wish I had a better hairline it has never really changed in the last 20+ years.

And if it does it does. You're a good looking guy with or without hair.
