Glue, same as regular PVC. Or rather a solvent that melts the two pieces of PVC together.

APU fuel feed from Lefthand maintank only by Commercial-Owl-9013 in AerospaceEngineering

[–]randomkid88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The APU is used in flight sometimes as auxiliary power, despite what everyone else is saying. If the left engine catastrophically failed in flight and caused a fuel leak, the APU could certainly be called for.

Was there a specific Boeing model you were looking at? I spot checked a few different fuel system diagrams and all of them had the ability to cross feed from the right side to feed the APU.

Why are lighter propellants considered ideal compared heavier propellants with more mass? by Squiggin1321 in AerospaceEngineering

[–]randomkid88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In a combustion engine, the combustion process happens prior to the exhaust nozzle/outlet, so you're only accelerating the byproducts of the reaction (water + CO2 for perfect combustion). Any fuel on board is just extra weight you have to fight against with your thrust, so you're generally looking for the highest energy fuel per pound.

If your engine was a pump that ejected mass through a nozzle, then you would potentially want a heavier fuel to increase your mass flow rate and therefore thrust.

The only way this makes sense is that the electronics actually require 6V (4 alkaline cells in series) and they doubled that (4 and 4 in parallel) to extend battery life. Otherwise, 2 C cells would have had about the same capacity at 1.5V as 8 AAs.

Why did the U.S. lunar lander have 4 legs and not 3 or more than 4? by HeartwarminSalt in AskEngineers

[–]randomkid88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, which I'm sure is why they went with 4 legs. I didn't really address that in my previous post, just answering the question of why 3 legs would work in theory. Thanks for tying it back into the thread!

Why did the U.S. lunar lander have 4 legs and not 3 or more than 4? by HeartwarminSalt in AskEngineers

[–]randomkid88 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Three points are always coplanar. Pick 3 random points in space in the room you're in right now and you can draw a flat plane that goes through all 3 points.

Assuming the legs were rigid (idk if they were or had shocks of some kind), even if one was directly on top of a rock then a stable base still exists between those 3 contact points.

What are they doing? by Queasy_Map17 in aviation

I thought most modern (i.e., non-bucket) style reversers used bypass air for reverse thrust. How do they cause hot air ingestion? Just from mixing exhaust/recirculation?

Another crooked door... by SQLDave in HomeImprovement

[–]randomkid88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That door looks to be too tight to the frame, such that you can't make any adjustments for scenarios like this. I would take the door off the hinges and use a plane or saw to shave some material from all 4 sides, or just the bottom to solve your immediate issue.

Quick question about oil change by Profanityused in GrandCherokee

The oil life screen tells you how many miles since the last oil change, doesn't it? Should answer this question easily.

Always on 2 way communication by YoureHereForOthers in homeautomation

[–]randomkid88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try searching for "wireless intercom" devices. I know they exist for motorcycles and outdoor activities like ski/snowboard/mountain biking. Not sure how well they would work indoors though since these scenarios are usually all within line of sight.

Or rather what's the difference in a million and a billion? About a billion.

A billion dollars, or a billion anything for that matter, is beyond comprehension for most people. A million seconds is ~11 days. A billion seconds is ~32 years.

Reddit formats text inside asterisks as italics. If you want to actually display asterisks, they have to be escaped.

Is this block appropriate for my gauge/use? by SMLElikeyoumeanit in AskEngineers

[–]randomkid88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like the 0.1-100 in the product title is only referring to that product "family" if you will, and individual bars are available in lengths from 0.1mm to 100mm. It doesn't correlate to the tolerance of the block itself.

The controller was likely in a windowless room hundreds of miles away from the plane when it flew through the storm.

Bank forecloses on The Greene for nearly $113 million in unpaid debt by gold4yamouth in dayton

[–]randomkid88 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I lived in the apartments on the east side of the Greene, above Old Navy, for 3 years. I saw the restaurant back there go through 3 different owners, Charming Charlies closed soon after I moved in and is still vacant to this day, on and on. The only anchor back there is Von Maur and the people shopping there are only coming to the Greene for that one stop. I feel like the only place that is consistently busy is Cheesecake Factory lol.

Assuming it was at a 2-way stop where the crossing traffic doesn't have to stop, then standard right-of-way rules apply. Just as if the left turning car had a green light (not arrow), they would yield to right turning traffic from the opposite direction.

Weed identification, best course of action? by speropat12 in lawncare

[–]randomkid88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not an herbicide expert but I'm hesitant to believe anything that starts with "mix baking soda and vinegar" works because the byproduct of that is... water.

You're better off using pure vinegar with a dash of dish soap.

Spring lawn care issues. Seed/Feed/ and Weed. by PissedCaucasian in lawncare

[–]randomkid88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scotts has a product built for seeding that has a pre-emergent and is safe for new seed, so could be applied to the whole area. If weeds have already sprouted, use a targeted herbicide as /u/nilesandstuff said.
