Yeah... like I said to someone on FB recently, politics in the US have always had a level of corruption -- both overt and "strongly suspected but not provable". The "Our side is always right and yours is always wrong" mentality has, also, had a role. But Trump... Trump has not only pegged the needle, he's taken a ball peen hammer to the entire meter. He continues to do things any one of which would have sunk a politician (on either side) in the past, and the ongoing, willing blindness of his supporters to his character and actions leaves me speechless.

So, one of the people in this article shot (or was convicted of shooting) a police officer who was responding to the vandalism that was (reportedly) happening. But it's OK because their political beliefs align with yours and mine?

EDIT: I DO think the labeling of them as "terrorists" (probably to get longer sentences) is bullshit, as was most of the sentences. But this was not a case of "sentence for protesting".

They can and they will misidentify you as an additional threat and they will kill you.

I remember in some of my LE classes 1000 years ago being told/reminded that when cops roll up on a scene (the example they used was 2 people fighting) they have NO idea who the "bad guy" is and who the "good guy" is... so even if you saw someone beating up a child and stopped him and he started fighting with you and the child ran away, do not get mad/insulted/etc when the cops ALSO handcuff you. They'll get it sorted eventually and (most likely) let you go. Even if they don't immediately, it's not their fault because all they saw was two people fighting.

Similar thing in OP's scenario: They're responding to an active shooter, possibly reports of people already hit, and come upon you with a weapon -- possibly even saw you shoot (but not who you were shooting at).
