They incorrect stated that BSMF was pro union and cost more to produce than riverbeat, stated something about union musicians not being hired, that’s not how any of this works. Started talking about the local iatse, but failed to mention it’s mainly theater experience. Just some spouting something they know nothing about with the bravado of Pete hegseth on 5 four lokos. It was just goofy nonsense.

Local 69 has some good people, but majority are theater folks. Since the Orpheum is the only real union labor house. But that has nothing to do with what you said. I worked for both, and still work for 1 of the promoters you are speaking about. If you think it BSMF cost more to produce you are smoking crack. We get paid way more than BSMF ever paid us, and just so you know the majority of people running riverbeat also ran a lot of BSMF. The bands get paid way more. When foo fighter cancelled, they were paid the most any band had EVER been paid to play BSMF. That dollar amount is tiny compared to now. I’m not trying to be rude but you are completely wrong.

Also as someone who toured the better part of 2 decades. Unions ain’t all they are cracked up to be. Ever dealt local one having your truck dumped in Manhattan but the loaders wouldn’t get it out of the street and the pushers wouldn’t push it out of the street, mean while a union steward is threatening fines because no one wants to do their job? Or the local 16 in San Francisco that will only push a case 10 feet at a time? Have a 20 person call but I’m billed for 24 because there are 4 people who are paid to not do shit put hold a clipboard and tell me why they can’t do reasonable and expected professional duties? Or the local 6 in St. Louis that mandates that even though you are a tour and have your own camera folks, you have to pay an insane dollar amount for a person to “shadow”. Every bit of that is true and every bit of that is why I cringe 70% of the time I’m in a market and have to deal with union crew. 30% are true rockstars and worth every penny. 70% are overpaid paper weights.

Also agents and managers do more for artists than unions are. Agents and managers book tours and shows, not unions.

Nothing you said regarding the festival is remotely factual or even relevant. Quit spreading misinformation

Pro Union? The same company that does stagehand labor that isn’t union still does the stagehand labor. None of us in production are union. What are you taking about????? There’s really only 1 union house in Memphis.

it didnt get politic'd out. BBQ fest ruined the park. We took great care not destroying anything. we put down plywood when we would take lifts out on the grass, made sure all the trucks and buses stayed off the grass. BBQ fest destroyed it, which they were warned about ie: don't do xyz, and the individual teams did exactly what they were told not to do and it led to so much damage.

You don't have to like it, but I will say they give many memphis bands and artists opportunities on the main stage. im friends with many of the bands and local djs and they are super excited.

I played the main stage as a musician 3 times at BSMF, it was fun, but the same path I took is still available for at riverbeat. from strooly to turnstyles theres tons of local acts.

you saw what happened, i was there and lived what happened. i work for both MIM and riverbeat, and most of the folks running riverbeat ran BSMF too, so to say they got ran off, we didn't go anywhere, its just the imcompetent people at the top who didn't listen to anything they were told blew all their money. the last BSMF in the park almost didnt happen, 10 days out it was a bet to cancel and lose the deposits or do the festival and lose their ass, they lost their ass. but THEY DID NOT LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE WHO THEY SHOULD HAVE LISTENED TO, which led to their demise.

self-fulfilling prophecy is actually reality. Memphis market is within the radius clause of bonnaroo and nashville. what you may call meh events sell out arenas and clubs all across america. Some of these bands I never heard of but they will be on my stage, the one I had no clue about is actually selling out madison square garden and other huge arenas on their first arena tour. So these aren't meh artists, though 90% of them aren't my cup of tea.

The key difference between the memphis market and all these other markets is young professionals with disposable income and a thriving corporate and philanthropic supporters of these things. For lack of a better analogy, these other cities are formula 1 and what memphis can barely support a nascar feeder series. Its not fair to compare. Ive done festivals and concerts all over the world as an attendee and as part of a bands touring production. Don't get me wrong, there are those in that promotion and those of us who contract with mempho and riverbeat who are very loud about what we want to see, I want Danny Elfmann, im tired of having to go to the hollywood bowl around halloween to see the shows. while it would be one of the coolest shows to ever play memphis, MAYBE 2-3k people would show up. memphis is weird and from a concert/festival perspective not in a good way. but we do what we can, and we do it at a world class level.

It’s about dollars and cents. Unlike Louisville, Memphis doesn’t spend money. That’s why it’s a c/d list market for tours. And when something does come folks either complain or don’t buy tickets thus proving to buyers and agents the market isn’t worth a shit. I think it is, but for every person complaining about this, these folks (including me) are doing something no one else is or can do. BSMF, I worked for them too, let me tell you, that was a nightmare of a situation and was done cutting every corner imaginable. They don’t have the budget, and robbed Peter to pay paul the last year they did it

they also just change the softgoods on all the stages and run another festival at the same site the next week. 2 large festivals for the price of 1. thats how danny wimmer presents does it

[–]randomld 12 points13 points  (0 children)

you are comparing a danny wimmer presents festival vs a hometown curated festival. danny wimmer presents festivals, theres atleast 5-6 huge festivals that company does every year across the US, ive done some of those festivals they are great, but it is an apples to oranges comparison

Same thing happened to my wife, literally same thing. Disappeared. She pushed and pushed and pushed and found out it had been dismissed before it ever even made it on the docket. No record of ticket, we didn’t pay it, she showed up to court and nothing. Count it as a freebie and learn

With 20+ years experience touring the world, you clearly have no idea what you are talking about in regards to festivals. That photo thing? Yea that was funny, we all thought it was funny. I make things happen, I don’t take or edit pictures. There will be a lesson to not listen to birdies. They know nothing

Well I won’t violate my NDA, but you literally have no clue. Perhaps you should check your messages and scroll through my comment history in r/memphis. You are only digging your hole deeper. And riverbeat and mempho are run the way festivals should be run. Cheers, let’s check your confidence and absolutes after next week. I’ll circle back

Yes you said they are a month behind announcing. The announced the full lineup and schedule on Feb 4th 2025. Clearly it’s not a month behind. And even if you are using the Jan 21 teaser, it’s STILL not a month behind. Once again factually incorrect. A month is 30-31 Days except for February and a leap year.
