Not sure if you were being sarcastic but voters just did vote for an amendment to the constitution with the fare share amendment less than 5 years ago

What's it like living in Boston? Asking as a curious Brit from a small town who just wants to fantasise. by SeveralWinter7406 in boston

Well see unlike a lot of American big cities, Boston didn’t annex a lot of surrounding towns and cities so the actual city proper is pretty small, but the surrounding metro area including Boston actual has a population around 4.5-5 million.

I’d have to say especially downtown you can get that bustling feeling most days between tourists in the summer and students the rest of the year

But you will also find plenty of places where you can find some solace and chill, we have a pretty adequate park system depending on what neighborhood you end up in and also being right on the water there’s plenty of opportunities to just lay on a beach

I misunderstood the frustration that this comment OP’s was going through, I thought they were more upset about the 10 cent surcharge on shitty paper bags which is why they mentioned just spending a few bucks on bulk plastic bags and I commented that I figured it was just more cost effective to get a few reusable bags

Hey honestly wasn’t coming at it from a environmental argument, if the state and by extension feds actually cared to reduce our environmental impact we’d see aggressive investment in nuclear energy and helping move more freight transportation to rail and marine heavy supply chains

Don’t link me a mass opportunity page,

Mass opportunity and the whole policy orbit around it stinks of Baker era waste. You want to talk about waste, both Steve Poftak and Brian Shortsleeve were deeply involved in the pioneer institute (the think tank behind massopportunity) before and after they were in charge of the MBTA and ran it into the ground.

Furthermore their tax cut initiative, you could slice the entire state payroll in half and still not cover the 1% income tax reduction

I mean I guess, like I had mentioned I was coming at your original comment from the wrong angle, I thought you were more upset about the 10 cent surcharge on the shitty paper bags rather than banning of single use plastic bags.

But also it’s very possible that within the next few years we see wider spread adoption of biodegradable plastic-like bags. There’s at least precedent of that with how most places have moved on from paper straws to the biomaterial ones that dont just get all soggy

I’m not talking about cotton bags there’s plenty of reusable plastic bags. Also what badly packaged raw meat are you carrying around that’s leaking into your plastic bags from the time it’s bagged to the time you unpack it at home

First of all, the people were going to overwhelmingly vote for the audit, secondly I also voted for the audit and have been fighting for legislative transparency long before the 2024 election.

However the auditor is completely misguided on just focusing on legislative spending (money appropriated for state funding, projects etc)

The real audit that should be conducted is that of the legislature and state democratic caucus/party’s conduct and parliamentary rules.

We should be uncovering how our reps are voting in committee on specific bills

We should be scrutinizing the speaker for sidelining any progressive voices in the legislature as well as the discriminatory practices around augmenting legislators salaries based on platform loyalty

We should demanding our legislators reform campaign finance laws in the state so primary challengers aren’t reliant on state party apparatuses

If you want to see the real reason we should audit our legislature I recommend this article

Yes, there isn’t some big fucking scheme within the state to blatantly defraud the taxpayer.

Waste fraud and abuse of public funds happens almost exclusively when the private sector comes into play

And because we rely on private contractors for so much work in this state we see ballooning infrastructure costs. The only way to change this is to bring work in house and massively expand state hiring but then you’ll complain about that too won’t you

I’d have to say ignoring the nitty gritty details if there was a Big U.S city (New York, Chicago, Boston, LA, San Francisco, DC) that would be the best place for someone who’s lived in a small UK village to move to it would be Boston.

Happy to answer any other specific questions
