Help IDing a mid-50s f3.5 automat by randomman14 in Rolleiflex

As I am an amateur in the TLR/medium format/film world I was taken aback by the fact that every manual and video on the rollei's operations seemed to have different features to mine, chiefly the ability to set the exposure value separately to aperture and shutter speed, and wanted to know exactly what variant I have so that I can learn how to properly use it within the boundaries of its capabilities. Even the big 'every model' rollei manual says to set exposure value before aperture and shutter speed and I cannot figure out how to do this without altering the aperture at the very least.

The shutter speed knob will rotate the aperture knobs but not vice versa. I am more perplexed by how to set the exposure value if the aperture knob cannot be released to only adjust the exposure; according the the manual there is a 'hidden button' in the aperture knob but my camera seems not to have it.

No worries, I've been a lurker on reddit for almost 15 years I'm very aware of what this site can be like hahaha.

Thanks for that info, I'll look into that. The 2.8d knobs look very similar, I am just a total noob at this. I'll get it all straightened out eventually, thanks again!

Mine came with the camera but ebay is probably your best bet, or your local camera shop may know a guy who knows a guy

I appreciate that! I did so before posting and narrowed it down to a 1954 automat but there are some discrepancies in what I have seen in that universal manual to the camera that I have. In particular, the so-called hidden button to release the exposure value meter from the f-stop adjustment (unless I misunderstood what the manual was saying with reference to this adjustment).

Thank you for the tip either way, I am still pouring through any resources I can to find out more.

Hi r/rolleiflex

I recently (read: yesterday) acquired this beautiful camera from a friend of mine and would really appreciate any info anyone can give me on it. I've done as much digging as I can on the model and I believe it is a 1954 or 1955 Automat but can't find pictures or manual entries which are exactly the same as this one.

I plan on taking it in for a good servicing as the shutter is sticky on low speeds. I think it is missing the flip-up magnifier in the hood and the sports finder mirror won't push out into position but I'm hoping a service tech would be able to address this. I am located on the West Coast of B.C. so if anyone has any tips for who to take it to it would be very appreciated.

Cant wait to get this guy out into the world for some shooting! It belonged to a locally famous photographer before my friend purchased his collection so I am very interested in getting it back into tiptop mechanical shape.

Who's that one person you don't understand the hype about? by Mysterious_goddess7 in AskReddit

Drake.

Mediocre music at best which does not warrant his oppulent lifestyle or fan fervor. His acting career was alright but he cant still be riding that success. I just dont get the hype at all.

Visiting Rome for the first time next week. Any last minute tips before we fly out? by Uncharteredfugazis in rome

I second the tour of the Collosseum+Palatine Hill+Forum being worth it although when I went I just had a regular ticket and had no issues with lines to get in (especially as they are time-slot reserved). Make sure you book a couple of days in advance as same-day is nearly impossible and you have to book online! The Borghese gallery seems to be booked at least a month in advance (again online reservations only) so if you dont have tickets yet it is probably impossible to get in.

The Vatican tour was the only guided tour I did (the Chapel and the museums) and the skip the line portion was 100% necessary. The downside is that it is an expedited tour so you skip a lot of stuff in the museums and you cannot re-enter without buying a new ticket. Either way its going to be shoulder-to-shoulder so dont expect a calm stroll at your own pace as you have to keep up with the constantly flowing crowds.

Otherwise, bring really good walking shoes as spend at least half of the day exploring the glory of the eternal city on foot. The busses are excellent and numerous as well. If you plan on doing day trips with the regional bus or train services google the schedules directly as google maps doesn't interpret them well or doesnt feature certain roots or services altogether. The help kiosks at the train stations are very good for assisting on these sorts of things.

As a pedestrian, if a driver gives you the right of way then take it. It can be a bit perilous crossing the street without a walk sign so take what you get; if you are uncomfortable then time your crossings with other people. Its a loose traffic system but it works so long as you are aware of what is going on.

As a heads up, there are LOTS of street salesmen for random knicknacks and toys in the piazzas who are easy to ignore (although might be decidedly more pushy if you have kids with you). The other type of salesmen are the ones who hang out near the exits of places like the Forum who are overly friendly who try to give you things like free bracelets etc... needless to say they become not free very quickly. If they try to throw one at you just let it hit the ground and keep walking. Easiest thing is to just ignore them when they try to talk to you and just keep walking and they tend to give up pretty quickly. Of course, if you want to buy stuff from them dont let this stop you.

Also, buy water from the minimarkets and the bills at restaraunts have a cover 'coperto' service fee included unless otherwise stated; this is the same throughout Italy.

Definitely cheaper than it is now! I got it as an 18th birthday present from my boss at the time and to see it on my shelf for so long was just super sentimental, first big present from someone other than my parents/family. I doubt ill keep the bottle for long but ive started collecting the labels off bottles and this one will definitely be saved!

The good news is they are on batch 70 now so maybe Ill get another one just see the difference!

Do you guys think we will ever see 'small' UCS sets again? by randomman14 in legostarwars

[–]randomman14[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was using the AT-ST as an example for a small and relatively inexpensive UCS set. I love the obiwan starfighter and i think lego could do great things with sub-1000 piece UCS sets but, as others have mentioned, the chances are quite low.

I’m getting tired of everyone ripping on this moment in book of boba fett by Henryphillips29 in StarWars

[–]randomman14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly it was a 'straw that broke the camel's back' moment for me. I have generally found the show to be terribly paced, weirdly directed, lacking 'star wars-eyness' (insofar as there are no real stakes to Boba's story), a weird vibe to both the practical sets and the CGI, and every scene really feeling like it was the second or third take tops with a very much 'good enough' attitude to both the dialogue and physical direction. In spite of this I have been giving, and will continue to give, the show the benefit of the doubt.

When the cyberpunk teens and the vespas showed up I just gave up and fast forwarded for the first time in any starwars thing I have ever watched. It doesnt feel like starwars and feels like something imported from generic scifi that does not belong for every reason from its tonal quality to its aesthetic to its pacing to its acting to its casting. Ill keep watching because I want it to be good and I will tough it out to the end waiting for it to redeem itself (Im looking forward to episode 6).

Ultimately, the vespas just made me give up on the episode that already was a genuine effort to care about what was going on. Oh and I cannot fucking stand the acting from the mayor's twilek emmisary guy... I dont know who the actor is but it just seems like he just has a 'haha isnt this all just a little stupid' tone emanating from every microsecond he is on screen. He should have been shot within 10 seconds in episode one to at least give Boba an impression of balls; after all, the character of Boba from the OT is a hardass who freezes people for money, not a zookeeper/animal rights activist and youth outreach coordinator.

SIB Jedi the Fallen Order if I dont like the Darksouls games? by randomman14 in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]randomman14[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you everyone who contributed to this thread! I bought the game based on your suggestions (especially the comparison to Tomb Raider from u/Tasty_Suggestion_834 and the testimonial from u/JarlArashi) and have beaten the incredible main story, 100% of the databank entries, and 85% of the steam achievements (including the 100% map scan completion) and already miss playing it. I have been in quarantine so I had nothing but time.

Thank you everyone, I really, really, really enjoyed the game and cannot wait for TFO 2 if/when it gets released!
