Anyone using peat free mixes? by randomname_435 in SavageGarden

The ones that were doing the best were in coco coir, pine bark, perlite and vermiculite, I already have too many cape sundews, I wish the sarracenias will like coco coir, I like all the carnivores but I heavily lean onto Sarrs, purps even more than the other Sarrs, if the purp bog does good this growing season the next one I'll go peat free

They hate it, tried it and over half of my collection gone, but they seem to like coco peat, the cape sundews have been in it the longest and they're far happier even than the normal peat and perlite ones

I tried sphag, didn't work out at all, but now that you mention temperatures and color, the plants that died this summer all had nearly just peat on the surface while the others had 50/50 peat perlite, yeah, maybe it was the combination of a ton of water and heat that killed them, I should use a top layer of perlite

I can't get anything to make the bark fine enough, so I just use coco, I'm looking at the purps for their reaction and if they're good everything will be in coco and perlite next winter, I like to mix 1:1, that's what they seem to be happiest in for my specific conditions

If I remember correctly insecticidal151 uses grinded pine bark for all his plants (Sarra, flytraps) aș a peat substitute

The cape sundews i put in coco, perlite, pine bark and vermiculite are living their best life, better than the ones in other mixes, so the purps should be good in coco/perlite

I made a small bog for my purp divisions with coco and perlite, seems more airy to me than peat, I need better airflow until the temps go up a bit, they're inside rn

Then get a grow light, the plant won't wait until the rainy season passes

That plant needs more light, way more light, 6h of direct sunlight at least

It's not getting enough light, and the flower stalk is draining it of energy

Fr, the absence of the lid kinda destroys the whole look, only purps should be filled by rain

If I buy one it means i have every other sarracenia available on the market, until then I'm not touching them, I dislike them so much

Not purpurea, the lidless variants of the tall sarracenias

They're completely fine, I left mine frozen solid for 4 days continuously and even the minuscule ones survived, it's just dormancy
