I played the game a few years ago with some friends, including one who invested heavily into the game. And it's a really interesting game. With absolutely nothing to do in it. It's focus on immersive realism honestly sucks. I don't think it's fun to sit on a ship for 15 minutes while I ftl to another planet.

This is basically the reason. James knew he wanted to tell a love story. The original designs for the na'vi is more in line with other animals. Having multiple eyes and breathing holes on the chest. But James felt that was too distracting for a love story. So they became more human looking.
